Folks, here is an interesting news report from today's The Star (Thurs 30/10/08) :
National Fatwa Council to make a ruling on yoga
GEORGE TOWN: "The National Fatwa Council will soon come out with a ruling on yoga exercise. The Islamic Development Department’s deputy director-general (operations) Othman Mustapha said the council’s chairman, Prof Datuk Dr Abdul Shukor Husin, would make the announcement. Othman told reporters this after opening the two-day seminar on Islamic Jurisprudence and Eternal Islamic Thinking at Universiti Sains Malaysia here yesterday. On Tuesday, lecturer Prof Zakaria Stapa of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Islamic Studies Centre advised Muslims who have taken up yoga to stop practising it as it could deviate from their belief. – Bernama"
At this seminar on 'Islamic Jurisprudence and Eternal Islamic Thinking' some spark has "advised Muslims who have taken up yoga to stop practising it as it could deviate from their belief. – Bernama"
Since it was a seminar on eternal thinking, that means it is for eternity. Yoga is therefore bad for the Muslims. But yoga has proved to be very good for non Muslims. Yoga has developed very succesfully over 5500 years and has helped millions of people (including my late father who was an avid yoga practitioner way before in the 1960s) exercise, keep their limbs supple in old age, help diabetics, help stressed out people deal with their lives and a million other things.
Plus a good yoga session can make you lose litres of sweat and fat. A good example is my friend Rodi who is about my age but looks much better than me. She is a Yoga practitioner.
As a child in the 1960s I used to be thrilled to see my diabetic father, who was almost 50 at that time, standing on his head - as part of his yoga exercises. I used to mimic my father and stand on my head too, something I just cannot do anymore with almost 200 pounds of lemak on my body now. Then he used to sit down and twist his body in what appeared to me to be a difficult position. The yoga folks say it is a good posture to 'massage' the internal organs.
By the way my father was a highly religious person. He spent his retirement giving talks about Islam as how he understood it, including travelling overseas with his friends in the Tabligh missionary group. He even died while on such a 'Tabligh mission' in Pakistan in 1985. It was November and very cold there. He had stood up and delivered a passionate talk in the masjid and later just collapsed and died of a heart attack. He is buried in Pakistan. So I never got to see my father again or attend his funeral - something I have never really gotten over even 23 years on. But I doubt the yoga which he practised for a long time had deviated his belief in God.
Here is something about official fatwas. It is an offense which can be punishable by jail or fine if any Muslim goes against or melanggar an official fatwa which has been gazetted. To our knowledge the Majlis Fatwa Kebangsaan has not yet made an official fatwa about yoga.
The Bernama report says they will soon come out with a ruling.
The other thing we should know is that Islam is a State matter in Malaysia, under the suzerainty of the Malay Rulers or the Yang Di Pertua Negeri (YDP) in those States which do not have Malay rulers. Hence each State makes its own fatwa through the State Mufti and the State Legislature and must be consented by the Rulers or YDP.
Fatwa must be gazetted in the Government Gazette before they can assume legal force. Fatwa made in one State is not enforceable in another State. In Selangor there is a fatwa which says smoking cigarettes is haram for Muslims. I dont think all the other States have passed the same fatwa.
The word kebangsaan in the Majlis Fatwa Kebangsaan (MFK) implies a Federal level fatwa making body. In reality the MFK cannot make fatwa that is applicable throughout the country for the very reasons that I have mentioned here - ie religion is a State matter under the authority of the Malay Rulers or the YDP. However the fatwa made by the Majlis Fatwa Kebangsaan is applicable in the Federal Territories like Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan.
In practice the Majlis Fatwa Kebangsaan becomes a reference point to streamline fatwa among the States. In other words on any one matter (say yoga) the States may refer to the MFK for direction. However this may not happen all the time. If the MFK makes a fatwa that Muslims must not practise yoga, it may not be necessary that all the States may make and implement the same fatwa.
Here is an interesting story. When RTM first started telecasting live the Parliamentary sessions, we were all shocked how the YBs were jumping, hooting and hollering at each other. It was like a circus inside the Parliament. But a State Mufti I know sent me an sms saying 'Kalau live telecast mesyuarat majlis fatwa, lagi tahu'.
Well if yoga is bad for Muslims what about qigong (the Chinese martial art which also incorporates meditation)? And what about the Indian dances like bharathanatiyam and odissi which is so favoured by our national dancer Ramli Ibrahim and his buddies? I am just thinking aloud.
Is there an Islamic version of yoga? Maybe then Muslims can still get their stretching and twisting done but minus the threat of having their beliefs twisted. There are just so many things that the Muslims cannot do or should not do. By the way the picture is that of coconut shells or tempurung. I could not find any pictures of coconut shells and frogs.

Tuan Syed,
Since time in memorial, there's always been the case that anything good for the non muslim is not good for the muslim and I think I know the reason why from your coconut picture. (Reminds me of the dog's issue in yr book).
P.S. As to your problem with yr lemak, why not try 'gravity position' by Dr. Win Wenger - Psycegenics.
Does this mean malays cannot do stretching exercises anymore? What about lying down straight - savasana? Is that a crime too?
Syed, how long more can the malays take this humiliation on their intelligence piled on then.
Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
On tomboys, lesbians and gays, readers should know that according to psychiatrists and the medical academia, there are 250 kinds of mental and physical sexual disorders, or trangenders. It is hereditary.
Only one of the 250 sexual variations is the heterosexual - the straight ones. The rest 249 are the homosexuals, lesbians, tomboys, transvestites, bisexuals, etc.
Every one of us have a major trait, and some of the minor traits, meaning everyone of us have the potentiality to be a transgender!
The muslim word as well as the tight assed christians better come to terms with these hereditary anomalies, and accept it, and deal with it.
People cannot help what they are. They are born with it, although the major trait may take some years to surface. They are no different from the other special people like the autistic, disabled, etc., except that it is not a deformity. Disorder is not a deformity. Disorder is a variation.
Such traits like homosexualism, masturbation and bisexualism is also found in the animal kingdom.
Most women are naturally lesbians and most of them, whether they admit it or not, have experienced some form of lesbianism in their childhood, researchers say. In any group of females there is always the dominant 'alpha male'.
Muslim scholars should take medical advice on these matters rather than being high and mighty and pass judgement on the innocent. Religions have wrecked havoc in the lives of people out of ignorance.

Expecting the unexpected is life.
Anyway, as we move further and further into the future and the way things are going, we may end up not having much liberties.
Hi,
I've been practicing yoga for the last 5 years. My practice is restricted to the breathing and asanas (poses) aspects. In all these 5 years yoga has in no way caused me to deviate from my religious beliefs (I'm a staunch Catholic) - it just helps me stay fit and calm. I have many Muslim friends who practice yoga too and as far as I can see they are devout Muslims.
syed sir, i got frog pics.. i can send it to u... email pls?
or you can goto google.com and type frog pictures.. a bunch of them will pop out...
I already had difficulty in grasping the recent fatwa of tomboyish dressing. Seemed that they could not differentiate between lesbianism and physical dressings!! How come the Fatwa Council never passes any fatwa on how the muslim girls should dress appropriately when we can easily see them covering every single strand of their hair but wear tight jeans showing their sexy butts and tight fitting blouses showing the shape of their boobs.
How do you expect non-muslims to understand Islam? It is getting ridiculous day by day. Exactly which verses in the Quran that say yoga is haram. I hate it when a bunch of religious wannabes try to preach the religion rules based on their interpretations and shove them down our throats.
I also happened to read one lady's blog with her experience going for a job interview in a government office in Putrajaya. She was appalled when one lady government worker ticked her off for wearing a pair of pants, a blouse and a jacket. A decent 3 piece suit but deemed inappropriate. She was told to wear baju kurung for the interview. This lady had to go back home to change. What kind of crap is this?!?
This country is making me mad every day...from politics to the social behaviours that they want to impose on us citizens.
S,
How about my favourite dances tango, rumba and rock n roll? Haram jugak ka? Habis lah macam ni..
A.
Sdra Gunumaro,
Thank you for your comment. It was hilarious (gelak sampai sakit perut) but I better not publish it. Selawat dan ameen sekali? If you care to give us your e mail, I will publish it. Then anyone who wants to hear that particular view of yours can communicate with you directly. You sound like someone I know. Senang, call saja atau e mel. Salam. Syed Akbar.
Ulama Wahabi punya citarasa memang macam itu...dia bagi fatwa bodoh...tak guna akal..dia tak tahu beza antara aqidah dengan benda lain..Dia hidup bawah tempurong kelapa bali...dia tak pernah tengok budaya hidup bangsa lain yang ada macam-macam stail...mungkin satu hari nanti dia bagi fatwa tak boleh sembahyang kat masjid Cina!!!! Tak boleh makan pakai copstick, tak boleh tai chi...dah mungkin nanti dia suruh orang pergi haji pakai baju melayu..kah....kah..kah....
Just wanted to ask a couple of questions, perhaps you could throw some light on this for me.
Now, we all know about the fatwa against tomboyism, which also includes things like not allowing girls to sport short hair.
Assuming this is gazetted by the National Fatwa Council, it means that this is applicable in KL. But say it isn't in Selangor, and a Malay girl who lives in Selangor happens to have short hair. What happens when she goes to KL?
And assuming that the yoga fatwa is also gazetted by the NFC, would it mean that yoga can't be taught to Muslims in KL anymore, but can still be taught in Selangor?
I'm asking just out of curiosity, and basically because Selangor and KL are so inseparable!
Hi folks,
mohd_ezzra@yahoo.co.uk aka Gunumaro has requested to display his email address. I did not post his comments here. SAA
Hi - there is no logic to this. Remember how they used to burn people on the stakes? Remember how Galileo was put under the inquisition for believing the earth was not the centre of the universe? Your father has god-given wisdom. Those narrow-minded twits trying to introduce ridiculous fatwa rules don't. Goodness, Malaysia is indeed turning into a kangaroo nation.
Practicing yoga as an "exercise", i dont think there's any "haram" elements in there...
but i think muslims who practice it as a hindus ritual..dat could be sumthing else, i guess.. coz "Yoga is intimately connected to the religious beliefs and practices of the Indian religions"..hehe..fr wikipedia
another thing, cover aurat..then, i see no prob in yoga...
I have a funny feeling that an isolated incident has caused such a radical move by the Muslim authority. Some silly Malays and Muslims at that must have followed the strict Yoga methods of a devout Hindu. When a devout Hindu does yoga, he has to chant mantras and even meditate. Maybe they have to meditate focusing on a God which is a deity. When a Muslim, who does not know the difference between who the Muslim God is and the position of a deity in Islam is askng for real trouble if that Muslim yogi focusses on the Hindu deity instead of the Muslim God. For concentration, a Hindu will be asked to focus specifically on the image of a particular deity be it Shiva the dancing God, Krishna the baby blue boy with the flute or the elephant god. The Hindu has a specific figure to focus on. In Islam, the challenge is to believe in God, the Almighty whom mere mortals cannot picture, conjure, perceive, imagine or dream of. In Islam, God cannot be conceived or perceived by the human mind. The Almighty is so great, HE cannot be seen by the human mind. That is the challenge of the Muslim. To believe in the Unseen. The Almighty is an Unseen. No figure whatsoever. So if a Malay who has not been brought up properly by Muslim parents does this mistake and follows the good guru and chants and meditates with a particular picture in the mind and if another Muslim finds out, what will be the next course of action? The wise move would have been to find out his family and friends and counsel them and keep this as another project to handle. Instead, weak Muslim men in the Council, for knowing no better and instead of putting the blame on their own Muslim brothers lash out at yoga, a Hindu practise. And make a mockery of Islam.
Muslims forget that the world is unfolding as it should. As God has deemed it to. Got fatwa or got no fatwa. When Muslims do not know how to adjust and change to the changing world, silly Muslim men make silly mistakes and come up with silly fatwas.
I put the blame on silly Muslim men who think they know it all and forget that the world is unfolding as it should. Silly Muslim men who do not know how to change and adjust with the changing world. Silly Muslim men who think they have no faults and the faults lie only in other religions.
Mistakes of foolish silly Muslim men!!The day Muslim men own up that they do make mistakes and have great faults and that they are not the perfect humans created by God, that is the day Islam will flourish.
I agree - a lack of understanding and the failure to realise the numerous health benefits of Yoga has led to something silly like this. The dailymuscle blogger has written a post on this - worth a read. http://www.dailymuscle.com/2008/11/04/malaysias-thoughtless-ban-on-yoga-for-muslims/
Syed,
Now that Obama has won and will step into the White House around your birthday time in January 2009,do you think he will go back to his original name of Barrack Husin Obama? I think he will. He chose to play down and even maybe exclude the name Husin to get into the White House. Now if he wants to shout out the Husin in his name, no one can stop him.
The beauty about Obama is that he has no inferiority complex nor any doubts about his origins and connections with the Muslim world. Obama had to play the game to achieve his goals. Now that he has got it and showed the world that anything can happen, he will go back to using his original name and not be ashamed or scared to use it. So what if his name has a Husin in it? He will still be the President of the United States of America. That is how he will be signing in when he steps into the White House as the President.
The world is unfolding as it should. Got Husin or no Husin in Obama's name. That is the will of God. All praise is due to the Almighty.
What do you think Syed?
Anon,
You seem to know my birthday. To answer your question about Obama's name and God's Will maybe this will help you :
'God chooses our relatives, but we thank God that we can choose our friends'. How's that?
'God chooses our relatives, but we thank God that we can choose our friends'. How's that?
Sorry. I read that and I was surprised by your response. True. God chooses our relatives. We are born into a family and cannot choose our mom and dad. But for you to say thank God we can choose our friends made me read that again.
We THINK we choose our friends.Sorry babe. I strongly believe that that too is a God Given ie God's Will like anon has mentioned.
What is this about your birthday?
