Here is an interesting news report quoting Nadzmi Salled, Proton’s Chairman. I have truncated it.
Chairman Mohamad Nadzmi Salleh said selling Proton to local entrepreneurs would better prepare it for industry liberalization and ease the government's burden of having to protect the car industry with financial help and other privileges.
Although
"During my time, our market share was 74 percent. It has now eroded and at one stage was below 20 percent but it shouldn't slide below 30 percent"
He said the company's survival would depend on its ability to bolster exports, which remained below 10 percent of its total sales.
Proton is in talks with India's Hero Group for a small car project, targeting a huge market of motorcycle riders migrating to cars, he said but declined to give details.
Mohamad Nadzmi also defended some level of government assistance to Proton, saying it deserve incentives for the billions of dollars of investment it made to develop the auto industry.
I think we have been missing the point entirely. We do not need a Proton per se. 1stly, we need industries, run by Bumiputras especially, (obviously because of the mengurangkan jurang perbezaan ekonomi factor which still has not been solved) which can compete in the open market without the crutches.
2ndly whatever good deeds we set out to do, they must NOT burden the man in the street. The public must not bear the cost of our good intentions. Civilisations have been destroyed before because of very good intentions.
And 3rdly, it is entirely possible to achieve 1 above without suffering 2. More thinking is required.
Proton controlled 74% market share in the 90s because it was heavily protected. There was no Perodua either (Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua) which by the way has now become Perosatu. They outsell Proton, so they are no more No. Dua but No. Satu. So change name lah – Perosatu.
In the 90s as a banker I was directly involved in the financing of Perodua’s first Kancil plant near Rawang. At that time the show was run by UMW. The Kancil had no chassis frame. It was entirely welded from stamped steel panels. Before they were stamped, the flat steel sheets needed to make one Kancil could almost fit into a large suitcase.
After all the hype and expenditure over Proton, here was our second car plant putting up a manufacturing plant on a shoestring. The financing was small by the standards of the billion Ringgit size loans of the roaring 90s. I was impressed.
But after 25 years I think our experiment with over protecting the car industry should come to an end. There can be any number of Protons and Peroduas and Perosatus but please end all the unnecessary protection, the high import duties, excise taxes, AP requirements and so on which make our cars the most expensive tin cans in the world..
I think it is high time the prices of automobiles becomes a major election issue in this country. Our people, especially the Malays. are being impoverished just to keep our protected car industries going. It is just not worth it any more.
So what if 120,000 people are tied into the Proton supply chain? 28 million other people are being impoverished to keep this inefficient supply chain afloat.
Mohamed Nadzmi has said some brave things and I hope he really means what he says. But don’t just be eyeing Proton and then go behind the scenes and ask the Government to extend the protection, the AP regime, the excise duties etc which burden the Malays(ians).
There is such a thing as urban poverty now. For example, people earning RM2000 a month or less in
The DBKL is screwing up
Add to this the fact that a tin can local car (I know, we got airbags) can cost RM50,000 or more (when a Toyota Camry minus taxes, duties and APs can cost under RM70000) simply means that two thirds of a RM2000 wage earners income goes towards paying for the housing and the car.
The car problem can be fixed almost overnite. Just allow Nadzmi to take over Proton but remove all the taxes and duties on the car industry. And please get rid of the APs too. This will see a significant drop in car prices and add more to the poor Malay(sians) disposable monthly income.
Then at least the poor guy can take his kids out on the weekends, spend more quality time with the family, buy the wife some new shoes etc. Better family harmony, more happiness in the family, better for the community and the country. GNP will go up certainly. People will be happy. They will vote wisely too.
The Government can continue assisting Proton but not through the showroom. Meaning the Government can give Proton tax exemption, special status etc but the prices of their cars in the showrooms cannot be protected anymore. That must be market prices.
Is the Gen 2 really worth RM45,000? I doubt it. Is the Perdana really worth RM95,000? That is a straight NO.
Proton has been trying to break into the world market. So far it has not been very successful. The answer is simple : technology. Our cars are basic. For the same price other car manufacturers are providing safer and higher quality cars with a lot of features and gizmos attached.
Now Proton is looking to JV with Hero of India.

Firstly, bro Syed I think you should go easy on this light-hearted entertaining way of presenting your facts and common sense logic. I mean things like Perosatus, chappati, tairu?
Many Malaysian CEOs are not very deep (intellectually) and will have a good chuckle at such articles, think the whole thing is a joke, forget it immediately and go their merry ways continuing to weave their magic wands of distress on the people. And some of them have and will be nominated CEOs of the year to boot.
So keep it straight, so at least they will some chance of understanding what you are trying to say.
Look at this statement, for example, by the Nadzmi walla, saying that "some" level of government assistance is needed for Proton, for the billions of dollars of investment it made to develop the auto industry. That's his justification for continuing to perpetrate this atrocity on the raakyat. Where does he think the billions of direct and indirect investment dollars to prop up his company came from? His pocket? Protons pocket?
Decent carmakers all over the world who started around the same time as his outfit are now paying back the citizens via better quality, cheaper models, and foreign exchange earnings by exporting their products all over the world. And here we are still in the thairu-and chapati stage, and crying, nay begging, for more government handouts.
Having said that, the point about lower car prices enabling the raakyat to have more to spend on for other more quality benefits is spot on. I have always said that. Why is a pachik on a motorbike with three or four children plus wife on a motorbike, or 25 people squeezed into a Kancil such a common Malaysian scene? You think anybody wants to risk life and limb just for fun? Not everybody can afford safe transportation, even our NATIONAL car, because you fellas priorities are somewhere else.
There is such a thing as fungability. Allow people to divert more of their resources to things that are more valuable to them - like family and education and food - an not on an over priced, undervalued tin can on wheels.
So, people like this Nadzmi fella, and almost all CEOs of our glorious country. Get off your high horses, stop preaching and really earn your keep. You may enjoy the finer things in life. But many fellow Malaysians are suffering on a daily basis because the good life has obviously made your thinking processes rather sluggish.
'I think it is high time the prices of automobiles becomes a major election issue in this country. Our people, especially the Malays. are being impoverished just to keep our protected car industries going. It is just not worth it any more.'
On top of getting poorer millions of Malays are driving VERY unsafe secondhand 'national' cars. I am no statistical expert but I do know some lawyer who is an old hand at handling claims and suits arising out of motor vehicle accidents. According to him the cars most prone to mechanical failures which lead to fatal accidents are 'national' cars. These same cars also have the least structural integrity among all the makes in Malaysia. Thank you UMNO for killing the Malays whom you swore to protect and killing the poor non-Malays who have no choice but to drive a secondhand 'national' car.
Long Live Mahathir and long live UMNO for giving us these national deathtraps on wheels. As usual UMNO wins big in the polls and Malaysians get screwed.
Tuhan have his way of gathring thing according to its usefulness[strength].For instance we are supposed to reae cow for milk and sheep for wool and not the other way round.Other expressed the same in a different way.like do not try nto force squre peg into a round hole.
The malays in general have a lower aptitiude in the manufacture, sales and marketing and continue down with after sales, service and parts support in the automative industry..The malaysian chinese fare better in these arena.
Hope the one malaysia is putting out our best Anak Bangsa Malaysia and make our national car project a success
Put nation above politics.
Yeah sure...let stop protecting everything....doctor India mau mari kerja ka...lawyer luar ka....cosntrcution company ke...bank ka. Semua mau duit...masuk saja. No restriction. let the best man win. Maybe editor suratkhabar also kot...coz they think since they keje kt kilang suratkhabr they should know everything. Maybe that is the reason sales paper drop kot...coz they are too clever. Last sekali become tabloid...citer hantu..citer seks dan sensasi. Pasal niaga suratkhbr pun x reti...nak advice bisnes org lain. Khhhtuihhh.
Proton is less than 30yrs nak di compare against Toyota (70yrs) or Ford (100+) or others. Volume pun kecik...Toyota jual more than 2mil cars dude. Are they better than us? Toyota, Ford, GM xder recall ke? Brape byk old Saga still otr? Isn't that a testimony of good reliable car.
When are u going to realized that the two main reasons Proton is failing is tw0: politics & race card.
Tapi actually reason dia simple jer....some of us dah jadi Melayu berjaya but not quite berjaya. Nak pakai Toyota tapi tak ckp duit....then marah kjaan. .......hahahahahahahaha.
see bro the real problem why proton or like any GLCs is the leadership or captain of the ship...
perodua better than proton is simply the 'survival spirit' that was owned by its leaders but mark my words... if they (perodua) too comfortable in their 'comfort zone'... they will too ke babom!
but i think the problem is also the quality of Malaysian cars...
Im in Jordon now and i was lucky to watch Top Gear in my hotel room and they were testing Proton Neo, perodua myvi and another proton car that i myself cant remember the name...
after the dreded test drive and bad bad humilating comments..they actually sprayed the car with some stupid words to 'kutuk' the UK gov on how they handle the economy and after that just leave the car near a sewer and make a statement ''we hated the car so much so we just left them and walk back home''
this are few reasons why they hate the car so much even its only cost them 8k - 12k pounds; they actually took the car the a public areas and ask the pasers by on what they think bout the car:
1. bad quality dashboards
2. when they open the car the rubber thing on the car door came out!
3. fiat is so much more cheaper/same price for a superior quality
4. cant remember..so many bad comments...
so bro...whats the problem other than the similar leadership prob in GLCs...
its the vendors bro!
the quality is going down the drain...
thats why even Malaysian do not wanna buy proton anymore what more foreigners!!!
me myself have switch from a proton perdana to SORENTO:)
and i think im the most crazy sorento driver in malaysia taking his sorento into the jungle and nose dive into a river with a normal tyres:)
anyways... tht comment is not just a comment... its a statement for proton...
