When The Learned Are Not : The Latest In Religious Discourse

By Syed Akbar Ali

Looks like some of you have seen a sneak preview of this post when I 'tertekan butang' accidentally yesterday. I was just drafting it and it was incomplete. The title in the draft version was also different "Fatwa Crazy & Crazy Fatwas". Here is the complete version.

A few days ago, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad wrote in his Blog about 'Sunat dan Wajib'. You can read it in full here. I have extracted some relevant parts. Here they are :

For those who are not familiar, the scholars have divided things into obligatory (wajib) and optional (sunat) actions. Wajib or obligatory are those things which they say are ordained by God which you must do. Optional or sunat are those things which they say are attributed to the Prophet, which is not obligatory but optional.

This is what they say ok. I did not say this.

Dr Mahathir has pointed out in his Blog that people often make the optional become obligatory. And as for the obligatory, they add to it. In this way they make their own lives even more difficult.

This is also where the problems also start. If the scholars start making their own lists of what is obligatory or what is optional they actually start playing God. Especially in the long lists of optional things that they have created. It is argued, even among themselves, if indeed what they say is true or not.

Often times they say things that are quite ridiculous. They may make strange or illogical rules which cause them to trip up and fall down. They shackle themselves up.

Then to free themselvs of their own shackles they make even more strange pronouncements and rules. Here are some quite recent examples from Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Iran. I have written about Izzat Attiya before. His crazy fatwa was made in 2007. Then most recently this year some fellows in Saudi Arabia have started up on this issue again. This issue is therefore quite current among them.

Saudi Clerics Advocate Adult Breast-Feeding

(June 5) -- Women in Saudi Arabia should give their breast milk to male colleagues and acquaintances in order to avoid breaking strict Islamic law forbidding mixing between the sexes, two powerful Saudi clerics have said.

Al Obeikan, who made the statement after being asked on TV about a 2007 fatwa issued by an Egyptian scholar about adult breast-feeding, said that the breast milk ought to be pumped out and given to men in a glass. But his remarks were followed by an announcement by another high-profile sheik, Abi Ishaq Al Huwaini, who said that men should suckle the breast milk directly from a woman's breast.

You can read the full story here. First here is a picture. The guy wearing the table cloth on his head is the Sheikh Al Obeikan. He advocates using the pump. The picture below him is that of Abi Ishak Al Huweny who advocates 'straight from the tap'.

What handsome hairy chumps they are.

In the 21st century, this issue about adult suckling first came to the fore in 2007. (I had raised it a few times even before that.) At that time another cleric in Egypt by the name of Izzat Attiya, a Professor of Hadith at the infamous Al Azhar University had made the same pronouncement. Attiya was promptly fired from Al Azhar. Now according to this news, he has been reinstated in his job.

"The case of the male breastfeeding fatwa, or religious ruling, just took another strange turn as the scholar who issued the controversial opinion was rehired after being fired by Egypt’s al-Azhar University.

The Cairo Administrative Court overturned the decision by al-Azhar's disciplinary committee to expel Ezzat Attiya, the president of the hadith department, for issuing a fatwa condoning the symbolic breastfeeding of grown men in 2007.

The court annulled the university’s decision to expel Attiya after he issued a fatwa permitting symbolic breastfeeding of men as a way to loosen the customs of segregation between the sexes in Egypt."

Here is a picture of Izzat Attiya. He is much less hairy than the other two.

Now here are two You Tube Videos. The first one discusses the 'breastfeeding' fatwas. You can see that the West is of course equally shocked by these things. What makes me flinch is that they blame Islam. Do listen to them because this material is all over the world, available at light speed through the Internet. I shuddered when one of these guys spoke of a '.. a deeper problem with Islam..'.

Ultimately it is always Islam and the Quran which get the blame for all these brain dead fatwas that are put out by these so called scholars. And I can assure you there will be that group of people, even in our country, who will speak up in defense of these religious guys.

Not to be left out here is another You Tube Video about another fatwa, this time coming out of Iran. A Shiah cleric in Iran has made the pronouncement that earthquakes are caused by women's "improper" dress. In Iran "improper" means showing more than two strands of hair through your tudung. Do watch the video.

Again the Internet and You Tube helps to show their stupidity at light speed around the world.

Where do these folks get these ideas? In the case of the adult suckling story, they get it from a book called the Al Muwatta allegedly written by a fellow by the name of Imam Malik. This book is often referred to as the "First Formulation of Islamic Law" (Nauzubillah - may Allah protect us).

I have already written before that there is no evidence that the Al Muwatta that we have today is actually written by the hands of Imam Malik. There are many versions of this book, from 12 to 27 different versions. The religious scholars themselves dont know if Imam Malik is the real author of which particular version.

If you are interested you can see the reference here. For those who have the tenacity here is this story from the Al Muwatta:

Section: Suckling of Older People

Book 30, Number 30.2.12:

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab that he was asked about the suckling of an older person. He said, ''Urwa ibn az-Zubayr informed me that Abu Hudhayfa ibn Utba ibn Rabia, one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who was present at Badr, adopted Salim (who is called Salim, the mawla of Abu Hudhayfa) as the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, adopted Zayd ibn Haritha. He thought of him as his son, and Abu Hudhayfa married him to his brother's sister, Fatima bint al-Walid ibn Utba ibn Rabia, who was at that time among the first emigrants. She was one of the best unmarried women of the Quraysh. When Allah the Exalted sent down in His Book what He sent down about Zayd ibn Haritha, 'Call them after their true fathers. That is more equitable in the sight of Allah. If you do not know who their fathers were then they are your brothers in the deen and your mawali,' (Sura 33 ayat 5) people in this position were traced back to their fathers. When the father was not known, they were traced to their mawla.

"Sahla bint Suhayl who was the wife of Abu Hudhayfa, and one of the tribe of Amr ibn Luayy, came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, 'Messenger of Allah! We think of Salim as a son and he comes in to see me while I am uncovered. We only have one room, so what do you think about the situation?' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'Give him five drinks of your milk and he will be mahram by it.' She then saw him as a foster son. A'isha umm al-muminin took that as a precedent for whatever men she wanted to be able to come to see her. She ordered her sister, Umm Kulthum bint Abi Bakr as-Siddiq and the daughters of her brother to give milk to whichever men she wanted to be able to come in to see her. The rest of the wives of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, refused to let anyone come in to them by such nursing. They said, 'No! By Allah! We think that what the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, ordered Sahla bint Suhayl to do was only an indulgence concerning the nursing of Salim alone. No! By Allah! No one will come in upon us by such nursing!'

"This is what the wives of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, thought about the suckling of an older person."

I just want to say that none of this is in the Quran. The Quran is not a book of crazy, wild horse stories. I find the Quran a no nonsense, completely logical and scientifically consistent book. And here is something interesting too. The Quran does not claim to be original. Whatever is in the Quran has been revealed before (Please refer Surah 87:18-19 and others). It definitely has a collection of wisdom that has held through the ages. This is very logical. Since there is only one Creator, then the message has to be the same. Takkan the same Creator would reveal different messages through time.

Throughout history and until now, people have resorted to making a career out of religion as a last resort. You will rarely find a student who scores 9As in the SPM saying 'I want to go and study religion'. The smart kids all want to do better like becoming a doctor, an engineer or something like that. Most unfortunately for the human race, usually only the left overs end up studyng religion. It is a last choice option.

At the Government universities in Malaysia, usually those who dont make the cut for the other faculties get admitted into the 'religious faculties'. It is well known that in University Malaya (at least for a long time, I dont know the latest position) those students who cannot get into the more preferred faculties get into the 'Malay studies faculty' or the 'religious studies faculty'. I think both Slumberjack and the Brader were Malay studies faculty. In India it is well known that young men from the villages who drop out of even village school may get sent off to join the madrassahs, where they ultimately graduate and become the imams at the mosques. That is why they are doomed too.

The same applies here. The imams and the guys who run the mosques are not exactly the cleverest people who qualified for medical school or engineering school. And these are the type of people you listen to when you sit in the mosques. Think about that for a minute.

Even the cleverest among them end up writing books like the Al Muwatta or they may end up making fatwas in Al Azhar or in Saudi Arabia.

While the rest of the world is moving ahead at light speed with new Apps for the Apple I-Fone or the next generation I-Pad which will be out soon, this is the latest religious discourse in the world infamous Al Azhar University and Saudi Arabia, home of I dont know what.

Conclusion : Table cloths are best spread on the table.

Wajib, Sunat, Harus, Makruh & Haram - are not easy to identify and to truly understand. We wish that the geniuses, professionals & brilliantly intelligent Muslims would strive to understand Islam & be a learned Muslim, but we are not perfect - neither are those in the religious departments. Illogical fatwas are shameful.

I always read your writing but this the first time i have the strength to jot down my opinion.

You see, the beauty of Islam is in most area it is open for the interpretation. I might not be agreeable to the above mentioned ulama about the breast sucklings but in Islam that is the freedom of thought. As long they have a hadith or nass to substantiate their opinion we have to respect it even tough we may not agree to it as long all parties are seeking for God pleasure (marthatillah).
It is very unfair and shortsighted to claim that throughout history all the one who went study the religion is one who can not perform excellently in academic. Then you must study the biography of all the famous ulama throughout the history to know their wisdom.

I am practicing lawyer and believe me, Islamic law is much more intellectually challenging than Western law,and therefore to said certain ulama in uncertain word as stupid without having any intellectual discourse with them first is a shame and clear evidence of of narrow mind.

Do not just join the chorus of Western pundit merely to show we are liberal minded. In Rasulullah time there was Abu Dzar AlGhiffari which you can say as an extremist and you have Salman Al-Farisi who was moderate Muslim and Rasulullah while agreed with Salman never condemned Abu Dzar r.a
May Allah guide us all.

Brother,

I am Non Muslim but I agree with you that it is the humans so called religious peoples who really spoil the image of the religions. They irrespective of their religion and their background just simply shoot their mouth irregardless the implications of the remarks.

This include some local religious leaders including a CM of a state. Peoples laugh at illogical statements issues in suit of personal and political needs.

We pray to God Almighty that these peoples are given proper brains to think and also the statements/fatwas are not taken in if it is going to smear the religion.

in another words, sama ke those people yg could be having phd in ISLAMIC STUDIES, COMPARATIVE RELIGIONS N WHAT NOT TO THOSE WHO HAS BEEN STUDYING, DISSECTING EVERY BITS N PIECE OF INFORMATION N KNOWLEDGE FROM AL-QURAN N SUNNAH DARI PERINGKAT DALAM YG SEDALAM2NYA?

let the 'specialist' in their field to do the job. n we let the 'specialist' in our field to do our job.

lets BE HONEST with ourselves... WHO ARE WE, yg tahu & amalkan Islam sekadar perkara 'atas angin'@ tersurat, to label them as'unsound ulamas' with 'crazy fatwas?

if i may,(i apologize), enrich ur knowledge with sahih muslim, sahih bukhari about the issues being mentioned. enrich urself with such reading materials too along with other form/source of information that u have been feeding urself with all this while because honestly.. u r one of the few intelligent muslim man still around in this tanah air..

*benda 'duniawi'/ 'materiali', tak 'berat' if we give all sorts of analytical opinions/ thoughts based on all sorts of facts, figures, logics available. BUT THEN., perkara agama.. BEST for the benefit of OUR own soul(if not here., the HEREAFTER) to leave it pada yg 'pakar' untuk berkata2.

Well Ibrahim my man,

Since when Ulamas are open to intellectual discourse anyway? Especially with plebeians like Syed and me? I have never seen it being done. They just go 'I am the learned one here in Islam, not you because I attended Al-Azhar U, I read more books about Islam than you...blah blah blah'.

You know what is lacking in these Ulamas? Logic. Not an ounce of it. Hence these funny fatwas.

By the way Syed, do you have a ManU T-Shirt? Better burn it and repent bro. Nanti tak boleh masuk syurga.

Salam Tuan Syed,

"Takkan the same Creator would reveal different messages through time."

Can we truly accept this kind of "logical thinking" statement?

Through my understanding, there were different syariahs revealed to different Prophets, where some syariahs were allowable to be practiced in the era of one Prophet but prohibited in others.

E.g. -- The inter-marriages between brother and sister during the times of Prophet Adam versus the syariah of Prophet Muhamad and some earlier Prophets.

Correct me if I'm wrong but can't we say that was a different revelation by our Creator?

To me, logical thinking alone would not suffice to understand Islam, what more to use it as supporting validation or to strengthen our argument.

While the rest of your article is worth reading, I am afraid that your enthusiasm to impress readers by using "logical thinking" may lead to a different kind of understanding altogether.

Wallahualam.

Thank you.

The Nexus Of Evil - Pt 5
A Pre-emptive Strike On Humanity
By Philip Jones 8-14-9

Introduction:

"...In Part Four, we discussed how at the three dimensional level, the primary coercive element at the very centre of the Luciferian Conspiracy is the Illegitimate Money Power, which draws its main strength from the practice of usury; and which could be defined as being a global `Usurocracy,` or a `Super-Capitalist - Communist -Zionist` Nexus...

In his book, `Terrorism And The Illuminati,`[16] David Livingstone explains candidly and with authority, that Islam poses no threat to the west whatsoever, and how the Muslim world has been so weakened by its own internal corruption, along with the subversive activities of the Western powers that since the demise of the Ottoman Empire, the Ummah has been in complete disarray, incapable of uniting sufficiently to even represent Islam, let alone defend itself against a technologically and militarily superior West...

Among the sponsors and funders of `Islam and the West` were the prestigious International Federation of Institutions of Advanced Studies, Bilderbergers,[22] Aurelio Peccei, Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, and Robert O. Anderson. The `Think Tank,` held its first planning sessions at Cambridge University in England.
Supported by the International Federation of Institutes of Advanced Study, and headed by Alexander King, `Islam and the West` assembled a policy outline in 1979, on science and technology for the subversion of Islam. Alexander King was also a Club of Rome member, and a founder of NATO. According to researcher Dr. John Coleman, when it was decided that a super-body would control European affairs, the Royal Institute for International Affairs [20]founded the Tavistock Institute,[21] which in turn created NATO.

`Islam and the West,` declared: "We have to return to a more spiritual conception of life...

When the Shah had introduced his plan for modernization, it was the Ayatollah Khomeini backed by the covert machinations of the Club of Rome, who emerged as the leader of the `religious opposition.` Prior to his exile from Iran in 1964, Khomeini had been based at the religious city of Qom, where, according to Radio Free Iran, as reported by Dr. Coleman, a former British Intelligence agent, he received a monthly stipend from the British, with whom he was in constant contact with...

The attack on the Shah's government came through the Muslim Brotherhood and the Mullahs and Ayatollahs of Iran, supported and manipulated as ever by British Intelligence. Dr. John Coleman, a former British Intelligence agent and author of a number of books and monographs detailing the Establishment's plan for a socialist world government, states in his report on Iran's Islamic Revolution that the Muslim Brotherhood was created by "the great names of British Middle East intelligence, T.E. Lawrence, E.G. Browne, Arnold Toynbee. St. John Philby and Bertrand Russell," and that their mission was to "keep the Middle East backward so that its natural resource, oil, could continue to be looted..."

Azman you said : i. different syariahs revealed to different Prophets ..

Here is a verse from the Quran : Surah 42:13 He decreed (shariah) for you the same deen decreed for Noah.."

In arabic : 'Shara'a lakum min-al deeni maa wassa bihi noohan..'

Please check it up yourself.

Then you said :

ii. "..inter-marriages between brother and sister during the times of Prophet Adam.."

I am sorry but this story is not found in the Quran.

What you say is derived from extra - Quranic information.

I am merely stressing a point of accuracy vis a vis the Quran.

There are no contradictions in the Quran (Surah 4:82). Within its 114 surahs, the Quran is logic consistent and also consistently scientific.

Adawiyah said"if i may,(i apologize), enrich ur knowledge with sahih muslim, sahih bukhari about the issues being mentioned.

Like Tuan Syed wrote Am Lakum kitaabun

Here are some glaring examples.

Bukhari Volume 1, Book 9, Number 490: Narrated 'Aisha: The things which annul the prayers were mentioned before me. They said, "Prayer is annulled by a dog, a donkey and a woman." I said, "You have made us (i.e. women) dogs. I saw the Prophet praying while I used to lie in my bed between him and the Qibla. Whenever I was in need of something, I would slip away. for I disliked to face him."

Bukhari Volume 7, Book 62, Number 5: Narrated 'Ata: We presented ourselves along with Ibn
'Abbas at the funeral procession of Maimuna at a place called Sarif. Ibn 'Abbas said, "This is the
wife of the Prophet so when you lift her bier, do not Jerk it or shake it much, but walk smoothly
because the Prophet had nine wives and he used to observe the night turns with eight of them, and
for one of them there was no night turn."

The (Exalted) Messenger used to visit all nine of his wives every night

(Bukhari, Book of Nikah 3:52).

The Holy Messenger used to have intercourse with all of his wives in one hour of the day and night (without taking a bath) and these (wives) were eleven.
The Holy Prophet had the (sexual) power of 30 men (Bukhari, Book of Bath 1:189).

Just could not help to join the foray.Intellectual discourse

Honestly Sir, like you I am fed-up with every other ulamak issueing a fatwa ever so often mostly trivia in substance and in the process denegrading people's world view on Islam.

Unless it is issued by the National Fatwa Council, I don't give a damn to what these people pronounced. They are just personal opinions nothing worth to highlight about or waste my time reading.

I would rather watch IIPCTV.

Mindful said...

Such fatwas make Islam the laughing stock of the world! They are so archaic that you wonder whether these men are actually issuing them in jest. Or could they be covert agents of non-Muslim out to make Islam appear ridiculous?

During the Prophet's (PBUH) era, cow's milk was not suitable to be given to babies so motherless infants were suckled by other female human.

Now things are different. Modern research and technology make cow's milk "closer"to human's milk making it suitable to be consumed by most infants. So this nourishment through milk from a woman to a man to enable them to mix is an ancient fancy born out of unscientific/ unenlightened mind.

Syed, I really enjoy reading your piece because it serves to make people think. Of course some will just like to leave it to the "specialists" in matters like religion but they forget that Allah Swt gives them His greatest gift, the brain (otak) and with it Aqal/ the ability to think.

Once you lose your mind, like being mentally ill, you can no longer be in touch with your surrounding or reality... tak boleh fikir lagi. Masa tu tak kenal specialists pun!

Let's pray we do not lose our precious mind.

Your comment is very enlightening.

The enemies of Islam are from within and without. It glaringly shows how much its leaders have been manipulated and exploited by the west.

In the final analysis, these middle east countries, for the sake of their respective leaders' political survival, will remain suspicious of each other and will never be united.
