Kucing Pembawa Penyakit

By Syed Akbar Ali

The other day I mentioned in passing about Toxoplasmosis, a disease caused by cats. A Blog reader posted a comment pointing me towards further reading. I did some research. It is quite frightening. Many people have cats as house pets.

.

Cats can be very dangerous to human health. Please read the following. This is just an extraction. For those of you who are interested, you can search 'Toxoplasmosis', look up Wikipedia etc for further reading. If there are any doctors reading this, who know this subject, I hope you will contribute your thoughts.

.

Toxoplasmosis

.

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. The parasite infects most genera of warm-blooded animals, including humans, but the primary host is the felid (cat) family. Animals are infected by eating infected meat, by ingestion of faeces of a cat that has itself recently been infected, or by transmission from mother to fetus.

.

Transmission may occur through:
Ingestion of contaminated cat feaces. This can occur through hand-to-mouth contact following gardening, cleaning a cat's litter box, contact with children's sandpits, or touching and can survive in the environment for over a year. Cats excrete the pathogen in their faeces for a number of weeks after contracting the disease, generally by eating an infected rodent.

.

During the first few weeks post-exposure, the infection typically causes a mild flu-like illness or no illness. Thereafter, the parasite rarely causes any symptoms in otherwise healthy adults.

.

Those with a weakened immune system, such as pregnant women, may become seriously ill, and it can occasionally be fatal. The parasite can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and neurologic diseases, and can affect the heart, liver, inner ears, and eyes (chorioretinitis).

.

Infants infected via placental transmission may be born with either of these problems, or with nasal malformations. Most infants who are infected while in the womb have no symptoms at birth but may develop symptoms later in life.

.

Studies have been conducted that show the toxoplasmosis parasite may affect behavior and may be present as or be a causative or contributory factor in various psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety and schizophrenia.

.

Recent research has found that the parasite produces an enzyme with tyrosine hydroxylase and phenylalanine hydroxylase activity. This enzyme may contribute to the behavioral changes in mood, sociability, attention, motivation and sleep patterns. Schizophrenia has long been linked to dopamine dysregulation.

.

Congenital toxoplasmosis is a special form in which an unborn child is infected via the placenta. If a woman receives her first exposure to toxoplasmosis while pregnant, the baby is at particular risk. A woman with no previous exposure should avoid exposure to cat faeces, and gardening (cat faeces are common in garden soil).

.

The parasite itself can cause various effects on the host body, some of which are not fully understood.
The findings of behavioural alteration in rats and mice have led some scientists to speculate that Toxoplasma may have similar effects in humans

.

Correlations have been found between latent Toxoplasma infections and various characteristics:

i. decreased novelty seeking behaviour
ii. slower reactions,
iii. lower rule-consciousness
iv. greater jealousy (in men).

.

The evidence for behavioral effects on humans is controversial. No prospective research has been done on the topic, e.g., testing people before and after infection to ensure that the proposed behavior arises only afterwards.

.

Other studies suggest that the parasite may influence personality. There are claims of Toxoplasma causing antisocial attitudes in men and promiscuity in women.

.

The study suggests that male carriers have

i. shorter attention spans
ii. a greater likelihood of breaking rules
iii. anti-social
iv. suspicious, jealous
v. and morose.

.

Female carriers are suggested to be more

i. outgoing, friendly
ii. more promiscuous

.

Several studies have found significantly higher levels of Toxoplasma antibodies in schizophrenia patients compared to the general population.

.

Conclusion : All this just from cats. To be safe, maybe we should ban cats from Malaysian households. If you have cats and there are family members who show those behaviours listed above, you may want to have them checked for toxoplasmosis.

Sir...

I don't think that domestic cats carry such horrible virus or disease. Most of our cats eat mixed rice (nasi campur ikan or ikan bilis), friskies or other forms of cat foods.

Only wild cats (lion, tiger etc.) eat meat which could be "infected meat" or "carcass".

How about dog or bird?

All these happen because of we feed cat and dog with cooked food. The animal gut need a balance bacteria (good & bad) , if we keep feeding cats/dogs with dead food(cooked food without enzyme) bad bacteria will propagate and when those bad bacteria grown out of control, their guts will be full of bad "guys". Dogs and Cats are carnivorous they need to eat meat..raw meat. If we try to fee them with dead food with rice, sure they will be very sick. You can look up for information regards to BARF Diet for Dogs and Cats.
Same thing will happen to human, we need to increase raw food/vege so that we don't put pressure on our digestive system because raw food are easily digested (because it contains lot of enzymes) ...now you see why the older generation Malays eat ulam?

Tak payah. Malaysian cats of mostly "kucing kampung". Dia keluar berak kat luar in the lubang yang dia gali.

It is the overweight western housecats causing the problem. From the usage and cleaning of cat litter.

According to wiki, transmission from contact of raw meat is more common.

Just have to observe 5:6 diligently. I find myself performing 5:6 every time after handling raw meat or after cleaning after my pets.

Tuan Syed,

TQ for the alert. When my kids develped Asthma 15yrs ago, I banned all cats from my house.. Now they are OK..

Behind my back they picked a stray kittent and hid in their rooms for 2 whole weeks without me noticing..

I suddenly developed some strange rashes, followed by flu like symptoms and coughings..When my kids realised it could have been triggerred by the presence of their "secret" cat, they admitted, and let go the kitten.

Will forward yr articles for their attention too.. Tks

Cheers

Sir, tongue-in-cheek post! But seriously, I think it is the male carriers who become more promiscuous, no? I wonder if cats will be banned in Penang since the state government are very keen on this banning business.

This is very serious indeed. I never thought cats can be that harmful. We have two lovely cats at home and we bathe them every week. Kesian pulak kalau di buang.

Maybe we should be more careful. Thank you for the alert.

Betul ke ni tuan Syed. My son picked up a stray male kitten, and now growing up to be a tom cat.The whole family especially the daughter frequently bathe the cat. The cat grows up to be a good catcher and playful too. Apa yang saya buat to make sure lepas si 'Kembang' ni buang air besar di luar, I don't like to see the dirty butt, so I clean it with wet tissue. Your article quite frightening tho. Thanks

Great, if scholars study and get familiar with toxoplasmosis, its cause and effect

Anonymous said...

toxoplasma gondii can be found in cat faeces or in the tissues of mice, sheep, pigs. people cook the meat before eating but who cooks cats faeces? normal healthy individuals generally do not face any problems with this parasite.
but it is dangerous for the immunocompromised and pregnant mothers and of course the unborn child.
pregnant mothers should avoid cats. period. its not that difficult

If you already taken down the "chicken seal" posting ....i like to say thank you.
You are high on my list of the credible.
There is so much ways to influence...lets not go into good hoax and bad hoax.
Thanks for the sanity.

C’mon Tn Syed

Not to pooh-pooh the seriousness of yr article but lets be fair to the cat population.

The ways that toxoplasmosis is said to influence personality of afflicted male sounds like the normal behaviour of teenagers - shorter attention span, anti social, breaking rules, morose. And the study suggest promiscuous tendencies among females afflicted by toxoplasmosis parasite. (I’m imagining my grandmother, a cat lover right now. Let me assure you its not pretty to imagine her promiscuous. LOL).

And yr article sounds as if u r one step away from kitty culling.

Cats hv been around for centuries. They hv been giving gentle companionship to many. Like everything, good sense should prevail. If u hv someone sickly or a young infant, the pet (whether dog, cat, hamster, rabbit or any fuzzy wuzzy creature) should be given away temporarily or for good – depending on how the situation has developed.

- we are Siamese if u pleeease.
Meow if u r pro - cats.
