Durian people say that today an "important" meeting is taking place between the Government and the durian growers and durian processors. People can even be liwatted over durians. This is another case of "orang yang tak tahu apa benda pun pasal niaga" getting involved in messing things up again (or getting fed with Musang King for life).
.
First of all, a little recap. As we all know, many stage bus operators in the smaller towns have stopped their services or are stoppinmg their services. They have been running at losses and they cannot survive anymore. Is that so? Is that really the case?
.
What happened to Sri Jaya Bus, Uttam Singh Bus, Yellow Bus, Patt Hup Bus, Len Seng Bus, Foh Hup Bus, Selangor Omnibus, and so on? These are well known stage bus operators who operated stage buses in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Tampin, Selangor and other places. But most importantly, for decades, they had been providing fairly good services to the rural people. People could go from A to B. What happened to all these bus operators? Many of them are coming to a stop.
.
The bottom line is, you can think you are being very clever, but if you mess with the market, this is what will happen - the bus services come to a stop.
.
You think you are being clever, you mess with the fish wholesalers and what happens? You make their operating costs too high. They make losses. So they will not sell fish anymore. Fish prices skyrocket, siapa jadi miskin dulu? Takkan kita nak makan babi? So the Government flip flopped. The fish wholesalers went back to work. Dont impose ridiculous rules on the fish wholesalers.
.
You mess with the Hire Purchase Act (HPA), the used car dealers' cost of doing business went up. The risk borne by the used car dealers also went up. Then what happened? The used car dealers stopped buying used cars. If people cannot sell their old cars to the used car dealers, the people will not buy a new car.
.
So new car sales died. This happened just a few months ago. Dah lupa ke. Then the Government flip flopped, amended or did not implement the HPA amendments - and things have returned back to normal.
.
And it goes on and on. Yes 30 year old school buses must get off the road. But give them enough licenses, give them cheaper buses (without AP). Only then you can put a gun to their head and say 'Change your buses'.
.
But when nothing much has been done to improve their cost structure, and you still put a gun to their head and say 'change your buses' the guy simply will not run his school bus anymore. He does not have money to change his bus according to your timetable. So he has to pull his bus off the road. Bottom line : no school buses. The school children and their parents suffer. Parents have to become chaueffeurs. Menyusahkan orang saja.
.
So the Government flip flopped. The Government postponed the requirement to change the 30 year buses. It will not make any difference. There are reasons (in this country many of them are artificial) that determine the cost of running any bus. As long as these costs are artificially high, the bus operators will operate at very thin margins. Putting more pressure on their margins will result in buses being pulled off the road. Bas tak ada. Siapa jadi miskin dulu?
.
SPAD has become quite a spud over the stage buses. They dont know what to do. (Read on - the solution is simple). SPAD is gearing itself up to oversee the RM26.0 billion MRT project instead. Not drive down to some local bus station in Tampin or Alor Gajah and sort out the problems being faced by the stage bus operators.
.
Someone came up with an idea that teachers should work 9 am - 5am. Why? Sakit hati ke tengok cikgu sekolah balik rumah pukul 1 tengah hari? I guess the cikgu threatened to vote for the Opposition. This idea too was dropped. Another flip flop.
.
To solve the stage bus operators' problem first of all it is important to just understand this part - Bas dah tak jalan dah. Boleh faham ke?
.
Let me say it slowly again - B..a..s. . . d..a..h.. . . t..a..k. . . ..j..a..l..a..n.. ...d..a..h.
.
This is the only part that you have to understand. Lepas sabsidi, lepas pegang lesen, lepas control AP bas, lepas batal lesen orang lain, lepas apa semua . . . b..a..s. . . d..a..h.. . . t..a..k. . . ..j..a..l..a..n.. ...d..a..h. Hooray, pandai sungguh kita buat kerja. Sampai bas dah takde dah.
.
Now who will provide affordable and reliable bus services to the kampong folks? Hah? Khazanah Nasional Bhd? Malaysian Airlines?
.
The solution is simple. Just break open the market. Siapa nak lesen syarikat bas - bagi saja lah. Kalau passenger ramai and someone wants to operate a 60 seater double decker London Bus between Kuala Sepetang and Teluk Intan, just give it to them. Kalau passenger sikit and someone wants to operate a 15 seater mini bus between Mantin and Tampin, give it to him. At least there will be a bus service. At least people can still go from A to B. Let the market decide what it wants. By the way folks, did you all know that the Lembu Condo was one of Idris Jala's 'high impact projects'? What an impact.
.
I can do much much better than 8% return a year.
.
Coming back to the durians - there is a new opportunity opening up. Durians are processed, freeze dried and sent off to China. Its a big market in China. Its a new market. Some clever people have whispered into the Government's ear that the Government should control this "durian processing" business. The idea is that the Government will set up a durian processing plant in Batu Kurau (a monopoly) and ALL durian exporters to the China market must send their durians to this Government owned factory to process their durians. (I have no idea how this silly idea is even going to work).
.
The excuse or alasan is very simple (and very noble). There are many small scale durian farmers who do not have the capital or the expertise to process durians or freeze dry them for export to China. So the Government factory will actually do them a big favour and open up new opportunities for these small scale farmers. Wah!! Baiknya hati Kerajaan kita. So noble.
.
But why insist that ALL durian farmers MUST get their durians processed at this plant in Batu Kurau? Even durians from Johor or Negeri Sembilan must be processed at this plant in Batu Kurau.
.
Some processors already complained. To pacify them, another Government owned durian processing plant is being planned in Pahang (Jerantut ke mana). Ini tak masuk akal langsung. If the Government wants to help the small scale durian farmers - by all means go ahead, help them.
.
But why create a "durian" monopoly and insist that ALL processed durians for export to China must be processed at a Government plant? This is the part yang tak masuk akal. Just let the market decide what, where, when, who, why and how the market wants to process its durians.
.
This is where we must look for the durian di sebalik batu. Is there something else going on here?. How much are the two durian processing plants going to cost? Who is the contractor? More than a brand new Mercedes Benz S320 I am sure. Dato suka warna apa?
.
Then who is the plant operator? Talk is that the clever towkay who taught up this crazy idea (in the first place) is also quite ready to be behind operating the plant. Who in their right mind would think that the Government can operate a "durian porocessing" plant? And being a monopoly, they will charge an arm and a leg for "durian processing" services. How much? One person said 'RM600,000 for one months production costs' versus an actual market cost of RM60,000.
.
This will greatly increase the durian processors cost of production. Every business has its risks. If you mess with the profit margins or artificially increase their costs of production, you will kill their market.
.
But if the durians for China market is affected, who cares? If the durian processing plant eventually shuts down (like the stage buses) who cares? Bukan duit pak dia. Lagi pun, the contractor who builds the durian processing factory would have makan duit besar (possibly at way above market rates). Mercedes S Series sudah beli. So who cares? Like the stage buses that have stopped running. Who cares?
.
And do you seriously expect the durian smallholders to send their fruits to this durian processing plant in Batu Kurau? You must be joking. Does anyone even know where the hell is Batu Kurau? The durian farmer in Ulu Langat will just open a durian stall by the roadside and sell his durians. There is no way that he can afford to send his fruit to Batu Kurau or Jerantut to be processed for export to China.
.
This whole idea is just an insane Government monopoly to squeeze some bigger boys who are involved in this business. It will just screw things up again. Like the buses, the fish, the used cars market and the fuel subsidy. Now its the turn of the durians.
.

PEMANDU is so bangang!!!
Takde maruah punya Melayu.
PEMANDU pulak bodoh macam buah sentul. Yang pikir project high impact semua ni budak budak berhingus lagi tapi swaggered macam ko tu lah yg pandai. Bengap jugak akhirnya.
Alahai, Malaysia suka buat arahan, undang-undang dan peraturan baru saja. Pada hal yang sedia ada sudah mencukupi. Tiada ketegasan, poor enforcement.....Contohnya apa susahnya nak cari budak jahat Afrika kalau mereka datang belajar. Cari saja pengetua sekolah/universiti. Mereka harus tanggungjawab bawa masuk....apa susahnya
Public transport in KL sucks BIG TIME. Now everyone needs a car in KL. Otherwise, you can wait forever for the super-useless KL Rapid bus to come to your area. C'mon you want to promote Proton, go ahead lah, but don't you kill public transport. I want my PINK minibus back!
Though it sounds like a joke, it clearly demonstrate how shallow are our bereaucrate. Instead of looking into longterm strategies, to add value to the supply change and enhance the 1Malaysia brand equity, it appears people cannot expand their bandwidth...grow up!
Bau lah kejo Kejaan! Macam tai sapi!
Ini budak UMNO mana punye kejo?
Sapa lain yg dapat buat kata OK?
I cannot agree with you more. It is the same in all the big cities where the lucrative parking collection is pirate-ised to crony businesses including imposing high taxes on imported cars to support the inefficient proton that we are finding out that there is no public transport(except in kl)system. Instead of looking at a workable transport system as a whole like getting the parking operation to cross subsidized the buses, you now get no buses on the road and an operator laughing all the way to the bank. This can only happen in boleh land under umno rule.
Batu Kurau is about 15 KM north of Taiping. The have the reputation of having the best Durians.
The article would have tickled my funny bone except that it is so true and it's not funny anymore.
'There is enough for every-man's need but Not enough for one man's greed"..Don't really remember who said this but looking at the way things are run in Malaysia it looks like all the wealth of this blessed country will still not be enough for the greedy one's.
This is Malaysia's curse.May Allah give a one way ticket to hell for these people and may he also grant us relief from them.
kasik kat umno habis, kasik kat PAS lingkup.
memang betul melayu bila berkopiah atau berbini dua, atau terlampau liberal jadi bodoh.
makan benda halal lingkup
makan benda haram habis.
Hahahaha! I genuinely wanted the British to come back and boot these monkeys out again! It's been proven again and again, these monkeys are so corrupted that they will even sell their own mothers to survive!
Typical rent-seeker mentality that you find EVERYWHERE! Surprised? Not at all lah!
Whoa Tuan.
Why am I not surprise when you said that,

Tuan Syed,
This durian thingie took place in mid year when all of a sudden my prospects started to ask me abt available durian orchards in Balik Pulau...
Back then news had it that the China market was opening up and if I recall correctly, the durians were supposed to be sold at RM200 a kg to the China market.
are they serious to export to china? the people there is not like msia eating during habit.
let them do it and they eat themself, ha ha ha !
Own unique style. Hilarous and yet able to bring message across loud and clear. WELL DONE. Looking forward to read more your future artices.
Those no-brainers at PEMANDU have nothing to do other than cooking-up silly ideas how to enrich their nepotists and cronies. Agriculture-wise, Thailand is well ahead of Malaysia.
some people in the present government just have to go.
no joke
i really dont think BN wants to win the 13th General Election
i'm getting fed up (bordering on being angry and crazy) because situations that arises (from stupid protocols/laws/procedures and whatever...) affects me and family
i'm a common layman from the silent majority
rasa mcm nak buat undi protes like PRU12 jer
Idris Jala dan PEMANDU yang superdungu sejak azali pun kata CANTIIIIKKKK.....let's do it. Malaysia Boleh....Bangkrap!
i feel sad with the current situation. most of us middle class are struggling with our life with high pressure, it is work work and work but still insufficient for a decent living.
Yet everyday we read these type of news. So what can we do? Tuan Syed, do we boot out the government in the next GE? I am really tired. It is like never ending inefficiency and corruption in our country.
I love my born country, although i am second class citizen here. I always remember these " You tak suka, u keluar" lol
In the near future, all corpses must be sent to putrajaya for processing before being buried. Charges RM5k per head.
Can some one enlighten me why China? why frozen?
How is this great idea related to sugar monopoly in the country & intended export of crude palm oil to China??
lu tak dapat ke kontrak durian ni...brutal habis...pi la AGM UMNO buat bising baru real...ini 2 kali 5 punya style...semua sama la...kroni kroni umno...ptuuii...
can we let the market decide? but who is the 'market'? those cunning what-ever-sellers or consumers like us?
DULIAN : PLESE DON PLESS!!
he he he!!!
i remember in the '80when we used to have mini buses where you just pay 60 sen to go from one destination to another irrespective how far the distance. It was truly economical!
But one bloody nutcase decide to end this means of transport to bring another even more "meaner" useless "intrakota" now consigned to the bus graveyard at Rawang!
Those were days! sigh
I hope Tuan Syed doesn't mind I put this article, attributed of course, to my web site so that more people can read this.
Totally agree. Too much government....
THIS BLOODY NEWFOUND BLOG IS ALMOST BLOODY GOOD, MAKE SENSE WITH THESE KINDA NEWS. KEEP IT UP. I WILL BE WITH YOU ALWAYS.
inilah idea kerajaan bagi kedai rakyat 1 malaysia, supaya boleh picit batu pelir mydin, lepas tu yang buat duit mydin..... ha ha siapa lah merana .. kedai runcit kecil2 kat kampong
you can't expect the govt to think of every nooks and cranys to make yur life better. in this age, their job has only come down to, safeguarding the administration. the doorkeeper. market forces are far too powerful, uncategorizedly wild yet supersmart, intricately complex and ghostly for them to understand. what more to control in accordance wit the administrator's limited capacity to think things through.
so, tuan syed, if i may correct yu, its not tht the administrator trying to be smart by mingling into things they do not understand, its just that they can easily fall pray by being used and abuse. its so much fun too manipulate these gatekeepers. the satisfaction to make them look incapacitated is far greater than just the monetary rewards.
of course, reversing on initial decision or the popular saying is flip-flopping, helps to reinstate confidence of the administration, but given this happens far too often, it has loss its credibility. its has become downright, ridiculous.
allo syed,
-bolehland's policymakers consist of super retards politicians and bureaucrats, particularly since petronas struck the first oil, have deliberately demonstrated bloody foolish inability to grasp with reality that the people's money which has been spent recklessly throughout the years in the name of developments has not brought prosperity to some major section of society.
-as such policymakers should favor and adopt policies that contribute to the reduction of price levels and need to make distinctions and apply differentiated policy approaches in the many states as people still need cheap, plentiful and reliable mode of transportation with similarity to tuk tuks in thailand, india and indonesia or to avoid embarrassment, minibus can be reintroduced, even though probably some of the driver were mentally ill and some were pure crazy, but this potential hazards never deterred people from having the fun toward their destinations. taxi is expensive and the operators are suck and the whole shitload of them are cutthroat scumbags and certainly avoidable if other cheaper form of transportation existed.
-probably the govt has screwed the stage bus operators big time with unnecessary requirements and regulations which made the business unprofitable, so they decided rather then losing it was better to just throw in the towel. now melaka stage bus services are suck as the frequencies are intolerable. nowadays if one is waiting for bus is just like waiting for a kereta lembu passing by for every at least 1 hour. and sometimes they just never turn up. even the state govt red bus co now is only operating mini buses circling melaka town selling cencaluk and belacan and usually without tourist onboard.
-u are right to break open the market. minibuses will fairly good for the jobs and open up the operations to anybody that interested without shiiiitt ap or whatever.
-durian project is another scam by the politicians and con-sultants to make easy money. same as lembu project.
tuan syed,

*if i were to vote for BN :
1. what can i say about this? Tuan Syed sendiri tengok lah apa yag jadi after Tun Mahathir's era.

God save us all...!

Can a class action be taken and sue the government to stop this nonsense? The previous effects are plain to see.
Tuan Syed, there is a funny article (may even be BS) being sent around in regards to PM last visit to China. Sebetulnya, dia nak export minyak kelapa sawit untuk menolong penoreka Felda tapi China tak setuju oleh kerana peranan Robert Kwok.
The story goes that he couldn't close any deals except jual durian. So, our officials played up the "great accomplishment." However, these exports are insignificant in terms of $$ in comparision to palm oil that is already monopolised by Robert Kwok.
So like your article on Proton & Kereta Tom Yum, we are putting the cart before the horse. Thailand knows how to export durians without dry freezing them!! Natural - semula jadi. We are building processing centers because government already sign MOU to sell durian instead of palm oil.
Imagine, we can't even beat a country like Thailand in selling durian!!
Another Potong Saga....
Tok Rojak
Syed,
We used to buy beautiful "Batiks" from cottage industries in the kampungs along our drive to Kuantan, Trengganu & Kelantan...good designs, quality & good pricing...
Then MARA came in & screwed all the cottage industries with their "Control" (Intimidation!!!)
What else is new in Bolehland???
Anything that the Ketuanan UMNOputra/BN "Touches" becomes "Shit" and not "Gold" like Midas's Touch...
Obviously with their "Bonsified" Brains & Mentality, what else can we expect...
The Ketuanan UMNOputra/BN Political Leaders have this same trait..
"Competition is a sin...
Own nothing. Control everything" - Rockefella.
"Give me the control of the credit of a nation, and I care not who makes the laws" - Nathaniel Meyer Rothschild
"The few who could understand the system (cheque, money, credits) will either be so interested in its profits,
or so dependent on its favours, that there will be no opposition from that class,
while on the other hand, the great body of people, mentally incapable of comprehending the tremendous advantage that capital derives from the system,
will bear its burdens without complaint, and perhaps without even suspecting that the system is inimical to their interests" - Nathaniel Meyer Rothschild
Obviously The Ketuanan UMNOputra/BN gomen is "Bankrupt" to now try to "Control" Durians...

“It is impossible to compare what Singapore has achieved to what all these four countries had so far achieved.
It was actually "poor management and corruption", and nothing more.
Everything is done for the vested interest of the few.
Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines and the Sultanate of Brunei need good management teams.
They would not be able to do this on their own steam.
I would advise that they call on Kuan Yew to show them what good governance is.

Well. next year the Chinese will start planting their own durians.. will be like the case of teh famous Hainan coffee which originated from Malaya then:)
ayai! it all about making money, when new transport ministry comes in, he propose 'new idea', bring in his crony, they consolidate the bus industry in the name of efficiency but replaced by some inexperienced bus operators, the outcome bcome obvious, make losses and later ask Gov to help, same story,.. look at our operators , which one make money?... even halal certification is also about money.
Anon 5:24:00 PM,
Ko nak pindah ke negara lain? I have a well-kept secret.
Go to India. It is the biggest democracy. A lot of people just pick and choose where to stay - at any street, natural air-conditioned, no electricity bills to pay.
They have amongst the richest people in the world. Lots of billionaires. Bollywood is bigger than Hollywood. They even dominate the Californian Silicon Valley with their superior IT knowledge. Next to China, they are the biggest consumers in the world gold market.
They cater for many classes of people. They call it the cast system. Depending on your socio-economic level, you instinctly know which system you belong to.
It is definitely an excellent option especially for Malaysians who find Malaysia unbearable to call homeland.
They know that
IBG, YBG
Govt jangan control apa apa ah tapi control itu gerai gerai jual mkan cukup.Make sure itu mee goreng ingredient balanced bukan mee kuning dng kicap murah saja, sayur ada ayam/udang/sotong mau ada, stock ayam /daging mau guna bukan itu aji n m kacau dlam air saja, garnish dng daun sup n bwg goreng then boleh lah charge RM3.50ke RM4.50 ke untung mesti mau kita tahu itu cekik darah yang kita marah, the most unscrupulous people squeezing the people are the dishonest Malaysians juga.
This article reminds me of this quote by British politician, Richard Cobden (1857):
"Free Trade is God's diplomacy and there is no other certain way of uniting people in the bonds of peace."
Thanks for the well-written facts. If only enough Malaysians read about truthful messages like this one. Like they say, the biggest enemies is ourselves.
Dear Another Briquette in the Wallet.
Thank you for the information, really appreciate it. I must say i'm very impressed with your deep knowledge about India. I will definitely keep India as one of my options should i decide to berambus from Malaysia. Don't get me wrong, Malaysia is still my country, but at the current rate the Government is screwing the Rakyat OPENLY as if we are some superdungu living in the cave, for the sake of my children, i'd better find greener pastures elsewhere. I'm not surprised if one day, Malay will become Pariah in our own country. The time will come, slowly but surely.
p/s are you related to Another Brick in the Wall?
SPAD bite off than one can chew. The idea was brilliant to set up one body to manage URBAN public transport system. The key word is URBAN PUBLIC TRANSPORT. So blueprint, policy, implementation etc will be managed by one body who has the required authority to get things done.
Tapi, i would say, they were too greedy nak manage public transport all the way from Padang Besar, Perlis to Tawau. First of all, they do not have the capacity to do so and then berebut turf with existing authority bodies.
They should have just focus on urban area in Malaysia tak banyak pun only Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Bahru. Plus yang problematic are only theses three places pun i.e. Yg banyak complain etc. Tempat lain like Tumpat, Taiping, Sandakan, Kota Lama Kiri, Sungai Siput...takde orang complain pun. Existing services mainly family run business are doing ok...why sibuk?
Now semua operator claim running at loss...betui ke? Dato' Nadzmi Salleh pun claim stage bus services dia bleeding.....come on! He is a businessman kalau rugi dari dulu dah exit from stage bus business. He knows he can screw this governement that's why he is still in the business.
i have no love for the opposiition and but i want the ruling government to know that ni bukan tok nenek dia punye negara yg depa boleh buat sesuka hati. We need to expose all these nonsense and get them to be on their toes all the time.
SAS
Sri Jaya Bus Company, Len Seng Bus, Len Bus, Selangor Bus, mini buses provided excellent bus services until early 1990s. There was no shortage of buses and people were able to move from one point to point without worrying much. Then came Intrakota and Rapid buses to monopolise bus services. People started experiencing irregular bus services, hiked bus fares and had to take several buses to move from one point to another. All these schemed to milk the rakyat of their money. The cost of transportation almost equals a monthly installment for a car, so people chose to purchase their own vehicle for transportation.
There are many services that the government monopolised and messed up big time. Cost of transportaion increased and rakyat had to suffer in silence for unworthy and unreliable service. It is very obvious that competitors are curtailed with insane requirements and frequent harrassement in the name of enforcement. The hidden agenda is to wipe out competition and monopolise. Pure greed and self interest is destroying the nation.
We need smart people as ministers and not idiots.
You know which was my favourite bus in KL, Bas Mini. It was on time. It took you to the place you wanted. It was 50 sen. So what if it was crowded? You got to work on time. Less people were driving. Now you see, everyone needs a car.
When is this government going to care for the people and not only enrich a few cronies? I don't think it's something that will happen in my lifetime.
Anon 6:20:00,
No. In fact I'm your cousin umpteen times removed. Salam.
Editor...
For your info....the current approved collection and processing plant belongs to FAMA which is government agency. And you must take into consideration too, they are not profit oriented but more to facilitate. There will be more privately owned processing plant to be inspected (and hopefully get the approval) by the competent authority. This will happen soon. All those newly to be inspect collection and processing plants are all over the country. I hope this will enlighten you and the rest of the readers here.
