I was at the Batu Tiga Toll this morning. As the window went down and I paid the toll, a cheerful male voice said 'Good maarning saar. Howvvaarr you? Have a nice day'. I looked up and there was this Nepali or Bangla guy manning the toll booth. He had a huge smile and was obviously pleased at his job.
I couldnt help waving at the guy and saying a loud thank you. I am sure he must have felt better too.
Sadly, just about an hour earlier I had passed through the same Toll Booth - in the opposite direction towards Klang. I paid the same toll - to the usual sour faced, muka masam girl. They dont say terima kasih, smile or even look at you. Although the interaction lasts only seconds, they make you feel as though they are doing you a great favour by accepting the RM1.10 from you.
Well it looks like the locals cannot even handle the toll operator jobs now. Soon the Nepalis and Banglas are going to take over almost all the entry level jobs. If our boys and girls cannot get into entry level jobs, it will be harder for them to gain experiences and move upwards to intermediate jobs.
There is no shortage of locals to work as Toll Booth operators. I suspect the employer (PLUS) prefers to employ the Banglas and Nepalis because they work harder with less complaints and perform much better. If I could I would hire Indons who sometimes come and ask for work. They do not have proper documents so we let them go.
I was on Astro once in a Panel Discussion and one of the other speakers said that 'kerja juru toll lebih teruk daripada beruk panjat kelapa'. I think he too had been hit by the muka masam "I am doing you a great favour" girl at the toll booth. The speaker was lamenting the fact that the toll operator had a huge signboard that advertised 'toll booth jobs' as a career path. He meant that it was a dead end job. Surely our young kids should aspire to be something better than toll booth operators - he said.
I disagree slightly. Any steady job is a good job - especially for young people who are getting started in life. You can learn useful skills in any job that can give you upward mobility. Simple things like coming to work on time, learning to speak clearly to people, learning to follow instructions are major assets for young people.
When I was in college in the US I worked for three years in the University's food and beverage services. We did everything from unloading 18 wheeler trucks in freezing winter snows, serve food to thousands of people everyday, man a sophisticated desserts station, make all sorts of sandwiches, clean and maintain beverage machines, dispenser machines, strip down and clean huge conveyor operated dish washing machines, clean the whole place up and learn to interact with with hundreds of other human beings every day.
It was a good learning experience. One of the most important things I learned was to clean the "hard to get corners". That is where the Supervisor would check - everyday without fail. They have a good maintenance culture. And people took pride in their work. We would compete to see who could clean the burger grill shiny enough to see your face.
Then as you grow older and mature, the sum of your life experiences and job skills makes you more marketable. Putting on a muka masam and having an attitude towards hard work is a great threat to your career paths. Unfortunately there seems to be a national level affliction among many young people towards hard work. There has to be a national level catharsis or purging to rid them of these really bad attitudes.
If our young kids cannot manage simple jobs, then the Indons and Banglas are going to replace them. This will become unavoidable. The Banglas and Indons do not have much opportunities for advancement in their own countries. Neither do our young people from the small towns and kampongs. The only difference is the Nepalis, Indons and Banglas are grabbing opportunities to show that they can work hard. They want opportunities. Our young people are pushing away opportunities.
So what gives? Is it the religion? The culture? The attitude? It cannot be the weather or the water. We all get hit by the same wonderful Malaysian sunshine. We all drink the same bottled water - RM1.00 at Mydin Supermarket.

"Good Maarrning Saar !!"
Syed,
Just to share this satire...
Admin Note: Please excuse the quality of English in this article as it is purely a SATIRE.
This is probably how the Professor's at our public universities would write in English.

You be the judge.
Shalom.
Agree with you 200%
It's all about attitude.
The muslim youth (majority malay) is busy checking weather their female pears is wearing sock or not. You know, exposed ankle may lead to naughty behaviour.
Being lazy in study (although receive scholarship) is ok. Bukan maksiat
Sorry to say this but its the Malay girls who hardly smile or say thank you nowadays.Just observe them manning the cash counters at the supermarkets or restaurants.Orang Melayu Tinggi Budi Bahasanya? Naaahh...!

Ops, i mean *peer
Saudara Syed,
Try being in a toll booth and perform the function of an operator reaching out their hands to hundreds of road users of differing characters and attitudes. I suggest you try that for a day (8 hours +over time)at the Shah Alam batu tiga toll, look at every face of the road users and say thank you with a smile. Then, post your experience in your blog.
SAA,
Agreed with you whole heartedly. Any stable job is good. Kalau nak kerja bagus dan glamour belajar rajin2 and dapatkan results bagus then good job offers will be waiting for you.
I had my share of hard labour work at cotton plantation. For about good 6 weeks, work starts at 5am and finish at 3pm. The experience taught me to be punctual (else transport will not wait), team work, communication (with other nationalities), general knowledge about other country and culture, cooking (yes cook your own meal or starve), appreciate money etc.
Take pride in whatever that we do...insyaallah we will do well
Completely agree with you, Tuan Syed. I remember when I first started, taking any job and giving my best everyday. Today, thank God, I am having a comfortable life and hope my children will have the same attitude like mine as they now lead a very comfortable life.
well, two simple answers
1) nepalis/bangla hv lower expectation, happy to get a job, our ppl hv higher expectation
2)Attitude
btw, i too hv to work like a dog in Restaurant while doing my graduate studies in US but there is no substitute for experience. It always teaches you something in life. Nothing comes easy.
It is a boring and tedious job and to maintain one's smiling face all the time can be difficult. All years that I frequently travel daily from Bentong to PJ and now from Shah Alam to PJ, I have been fortunate not to encounter lots of "masam" face. Usually, if I remember to do so, I would give a smile first and always receive one back.
i guess the one that wore the 'muka masam' is a tudung-wearing girl ....
I notice lately that non-tudung wearing girls have more cheerful outlook.
it should be the other way around.
Well, nowadays there are young people, just only had a diploma, decided they must get a job, where they can wear a tie and sit behind a desk and a computaaar....
Race also matters. If the girl is Malay and you are not, usually they dont smile at all. Not only toll booth but in the shop counter, bank teller, book shop or Petronas station, office receptionist it is the same. If the girl or guy is Malay and you are not they dont want to layan you well. If they are good in business its ok, the reality is their business skills are so poor. Poor service like this will make their business close shop quicker. People will avoid them.
Talking about smile, I think Nik Aziz rarely smile.
So when it does not happen to tudung girls, it does not happen to lebais and serbans???/
Haahaha agreed with Mae 4.24,
Nowaday by physically looking good and saint (men or women), will allow them to ignore all those hard works, thinking, strategies, improvement, how to get things better, the execution etc...
Get dress up (Arab looking), no need to use the brain anymore.
It is about time we automate the toll system in Malaysia nationwide. All these people Bangladeshis or Malaysians are what causing massive traffic jam at toll booth day in day out.
should follow the Thais, very friendly even when they are manning the parking collection booth..
Actually, i got lot of complaints abt our young generation. One example: my newphews,-when they need money to buy cars, i have to help them but they dont even thank me for helping, they only come to me when they hv problems like cars break down. They are really spoiled brats. Got to do with attitude and up-bringing.
story 2: my fren insist he wanted to work oversea, he want big money and want to work as expat, until now(no offer), he told me he has been praying for 5 yrs and Tuhan has not given him an answer yet.FYI,he got plenty of degree/Master papers but pocket poor. Not sure what his problem!
manning counters be it toll booth or service counters is a tiring job. One must consider the fatigue factor which increases over time. Actually all sort of work do have fatigue factor affecting performances.
Anyway... I believe its not a typical case across the board where all are bad apples.
dear syed,
mostly everyone here assumes the muka masam girl is a malay tudung girl.
quite rightly so as we encounter them everytime at any counters.....
its always not a good day for us to lecture them of how to promote the business they do.... to a bewildered face.
but JOB TRAINING among our businesses is also lacking, compared to the malays in singapore or even indonesia.
thank you
why must we wait for the others to smile first? i always give a smile first, and more often than not, i will get a smiling response. just try it.
and please, do not put race, attire, age, etc into the equation.
spot on observation.
i travel to china, korea, taiwan, japan and what i observe is that their highway booths (including parking lots etc) are usually peopled by women who never cease to say thank you and/or smile. it just lift the spirits to say the least..
in our case i think upbringing is one of the contributory factors..kids brought up in families lower down the scale are unfortunately subjected to (unnecessarily) harsher daily challenges where casual verbal abuse is rife and mutual.
i suspect that, for some people, the tudung is just a mask hiding their low self-esteem. it is sad, really.
as you suggested, catharsis is needed; and like nearly all things human, it can begin at home.
salams and keep it up.
goOD Evening Saar,
do u think that RM30.6bn new sukuk issuance can help automate this issue?
PLUS should issue Smiling Face Masks to those who don't know how to smile or don't like to smile. That will satisfy everyone.
That also helps to shield all those ugly faces and unwanted casanove looks.
Same goes for all law enforcers, receptionists, counter girls, court officials, Jakim, JAIS, teachers, govt servants, body guards, wives, husbands, children and most of all Malaysian politicians.
I refuse to let another person's face spoil my day.
I refuse to be judgemental of a person whole character based on the few seconds I see her.
I support self improvement
I resist stereotyping
Tuan Syed. I think you just nailed the coffin. After 50 years of Merdeka, NEP, just working at toll booth. Non-Malays aren't even allowed entry into toll boothjob. As seen, even can't get into post office job let alone any other openings because can't pass school, can't pass BM or English.
So now, adding insult to injury, Bangla replacing "muka masam." Go KFC, store manager is Bangla. So now Malays, Chinese & Indians, Dayaks, Kadazan-Dusuns in same2 boat - we are still where we started in terms of education and our level in economic competitives. No-where.
allo syed,
-foreign workers who have found bolehland as a seventh heaven for themselves and majority of bolehland dudes wanted this issue to disappear long time ago. only certain ministers and certainly with pm green light have ignored the rumble in the ground. the govt all along has been listening and in agreement with the big, semi, small and even crappy crap businesses to flood bolehland with super cheap labors from shitholes. the attention among others is to get the insanely lowest input costs possible for productions as to remain competitive with china and others.
-while these endeavors are attained, the blue color lower ranks local workers have to suffer with stagnant wages and to certain extent even have to tolerate some reduction in wages in order to get the opportunity to work otherwise foreign labors like the banglas, nepalis and vietcong would bag the jobs.
-govt must not depend on these profit oriented businesses to practice bolehland first for the job. as their existences for the purpose of making shit loads of profit comes what may. they would use whatever means and advantages to be profitable and with foreign cheap labors aka slaves with no benefits and such have created another route of making extra profits.
-the current dependence on cheap foreign labour aka slaves are not good for bolehland economy. billions have been flowing overseas. what goes around comes back around, with fewer locals blue colors working and many choose not to work because of lowly wages and crap benefits, the consumption and spending cycles are effected likewise things and crap which i'm not sure will sell easily anymore. these foreign workers attention were for money and then to send large portion of it back home. they would not buy pricey assets and crap which could contribute to the economic cycles. should bolehland continue to ignore these butt hurt kind of probabilities then a lot of it's people will suffer.
-just get rid of these foreign workers as this matter will also effected ameno chances to win in the coming ge. substantial number of voters are youngsters and they knew damn well about this situation. pissing them off with provoking words won't do any good as the youngster knew who in-fact that have messed the job opportunities in bolehland. this foreign labors fiasco shit were made to happen by the unpatriotic type of politicians who don't give a shit to their youngsters well being and future.
-once these foreign slaves disappear from bolehland, all the crappy businesses have to employ bolehland dudes. competition for local workers will certainly increase wages and benefits. only real businesses should survive the con-businesses will parish for good.
-sometimes bolehland dudes who are kind of a snob because of the money they got in banks expect everybody to respect and threat them well. some jobs are so boring and butt breaking would make the person lose or fake the smile. not every job requires a smile, should anyone lucky enough to be in a jailhouse just don't expect the warden to give you a pretty girly smile. certainly one would get the super kick in the ass because of it. similarly if one is a potential or existing criminal, don't imagine the authorities would smile to you. instead one will get a stick up the ass.
Harbin Tan, I don't agree with you. If you applied for the job, then do your best. If you find the job is too depressing for you, then leave. There are others waiting for your job.
The young people are pushing away opportunities because they have crutches. Take away the crutches and see what happens.
Of course the government won't do it. They are too scared.
Do you know it takes more facial muscles working for "muka masam than to smile?
Tuan Syed,
Does anyone consiously smile and put on a happy face each and everytime you hand over cash to the bangla/indon/tudung/non-tudung/etc person at the tool booth ? Does it even matters what race, or color of tudung, before you put on a big 5 seconds smile. Try it and find yourself rewarded by a bigger sweeter smile.
The human being behind the counter is just as stressed and weary as you are. AND is related to you going back enough years. Please help him/her make it through the day.
Why is there unreasonable expectation of happy smiley response from service staffs by the very people who themselves display muka masam and low budi bahasa. How?
Remember 'do unto others' and that the mirror to your soul (nastiness and rudeness included) is the face looking back at you.
ps. I take it that none of the esteemed commentators personally knew anyone who worked at a tool booth.
onekaicha
i would not judge them. you think you pay their employer RM1.10 and you think you own them and they should layan you real special. a big smile is mandatory.
i, myself sometimes did not make eye contact with toll girl, i rarely smile to them. i don't expect as much from them either. i just want to pay up and leave ASAP. i did not care for their name or work.
they are there to do their one job efficiently, which is take our money and give the balance. and they do this to thousands of people everyday in a cramped and boring booth. the work is so routine and the same everyday and every hour it must have feel like a robot sometimes. so i would not judge them.
the bangla is over excited because he is new and come from a country so poor manning a tool booth must feel like a rock star job. give him 5 years, the smile will wear off. you're lucky if it does not turn into a frown.
FC
dear syed, once again a wonderful observation
many of the young people today refuse to work hard and i do not agree with the comments that it affects only the malays
in my experience this laziness cuts across all three races - malays, chinese and indians - i am a senior government doctor and for the past two years we are having problems with all the new house officers ( these are very junior doctors who have joined service after passing their medical examinations) - there a quite a number who avoids hard work, comes with all kinds of excuses to avoid work some of which are hilarious - one excuse is that they cannot stand the sight of blood, few of these doctors thought that once they graduate they would be given a desk job etc
apa kena mengena pakai tudung dan tak pakai tudung dengan toll girls?
Bangla dapat kerja , melayu kena kutuk , apahal?
Bang... amboi ada kat GMM tak tegur kita noooo?
Soalan pon garang bukan main...
Such is the specialise nature of a toll-booth staff that kalau tiada Melayu we cross the seven seas to bring Banglas,Nepals dan lain-lain but orang Asli. Orang Sabah, orang Sarawak or orang India tiada peluang nak buat kerja complicated and specialised ini.
Tuan Syed, minta maaf untuk izin nak buat komen lanjutan. Harap diizinkan.
While on the topic of toll-booth attendants who buat muka masam. satu lagi budaya mereka dan infact almost all front line sales people in Malaysia is the refusal to say thank you when receiving payment or while giving goods purchased to purchaser.
Yang pelik dinegara-negara kafir barat atau Jepun the sales staff will definitely say thank you lebih-lebih lagi in mom and pop stores. Tak perlu kerajaan buat kempen "smile and say thank you" or tuan guru agama buka buku kitab dan tunjuk ayat suruh cakap "thank you" etc.
By the way when my mum and I came to your shop. your staff did say thank you lepas I beli rantai emas.
Talking of foreigner, I thought we have a law saying security personnels must be malaysian. When I visited the KLCC, I thought I am in a foreign country or maybe shall we say united nation.
Why don't I care whether those toll girls smile or not, bertudung or not......I use SMART TAG, thats why....hahaha!
It could very well be just PMS.
Salam tuan syed,
Pakai smart tag je. Laluan tol slalu sesak sebab nak bayar cash punya hal. Toll staff tu boleh dimanafaatkan buat kerja lain . Sayang, tenaga muda belia diletak kat dalam tol tu. Yang beratur panjang panjang kat tol tu pun membazir minyak.
maybe send them for 'motivational' trainings, that would help.
another observation, the tudung wearing is like being 'institutionalized' otherwise how to explain the corporate color scarf???.
Kerja juru kutip tol ini sama seperti robot dan jawatan sebenarnya ialah sama seperti pembantu 'penyamun' jalanan.
