Air Asia : "Now Everyone Cannot Fly"

Tony Fernandez took over Air Asia in 2001. In 11 years of rock and roll growth, Air Asia has become the largest low cost carrier in Asia. This is a fantastic achievement by any measure.

However the intermittent announcements by Air Asia that they are cutting routes indicates not everything is going on as planned. I hope they do better. We really want our Malaysian companies to do well and succeed. It is good for the country and for all of us. Maybe 11 years down the road a reality check is due.

The frequently heard comment even among Cabinet Ministers is that Air Asia flies in about 10 million visitors to Malaysia annually.

A top CEO of a conglomerate pointed out recently that many of these passengers were "stolen" from MAS. There is much truth to this. In the past few years, even my family and I have travelled almost exclusively on Air Asia. Before we used to travel on MAS. So to say that Air Asia flies in an extra 10 million "new" visitors into Malaysia is perhaps quite off the mark. They have actually taken business away from MAS.

Air Asia does take the Nobel Prize for publicity stunts, aggressive ads and staying firmly in the public eye. Do you all remember when Bali suffered the bomb attacks? People just stopped going to Bali. Stepping up to the plate, Tony Fernandez announced that Air Asia would provide one million free tickets for flights into Bali. (The return flight saya tak tahu - usually they charge higher fares for the return flight). Immediately Tony Fernandez received huge publicity and the everlasting gratitude of the people of Bali.

But did anyone stop and figure things out a little ? One million free tickets is a lot of flights. Considering an Airbus A320 seats 140 passengers, that works out to 7142 flights. If AA flew just one flight a day to Bali, it would take 19.5 years to give away all those one million free tickets to Bali. Surely a lot of gimmickry was involved. It was a publicity stunt. The fact that the headline grabbing announcements were made while the ashes of the Bali bombings were still warm does exhibit some ruthlessness.

Similar to the claims of having brought in 10.0 million visitors to Malaysia.

Then Air Asia also went head to head with MAS on many routes, including in Sabah and Sarawak. In the face of AA's stiff competition, MAS retreated from these routes. AA became the monopoly operator on some of these air routes. Now Air Asia themselves are cutting back and shutting down these 'unprofitable' roots. So from "now everyone can fly" it has become "now everyone cannot fly" on some of these air routes.

A few days ago I also received this sms from someone :
"Air Asia is in mess. Biz model not working. Can't fly to Brisbane and Qatar for not paying. Singapore not gonna service their Airbus."

If true this can be quite serious. The fact that Air Asia has been cutting some routes entirely is no mere coincidence. I also think that the recent share swap where Air Asia has become a shareholder in MAS is perhaps a lifeline for Air Asia. I dont think it adds much value to MAS.

I received another sms from another former top gun in our corporate circles. The sms said :

"I luv ur Air Asia Mas conversation (btw a little bird whispered to me that the MAS share swap with AA comes with NO due diligence #*?- go check out). Yes - they were appointed during Badawi's time. Was Azman Mokhtar a "sizzling" investment banker b4 joining Khazanah? Smith Barney apparently calls him a "Duffer" - find out when he was in Smith Barney what was his outstanding achievements? Then Bina Fikir? Asset unbundling? In ***** we say "angkat kain sarong jual semua". Also if you look @ BOD of Khazanah you have mostly Melayus who failed - Azlan Hash*m one of them."

I received this sms after my post on Khazanah Nasional. So the MAS share swap with AA was done without a DUE DILIGENCE? If so, that is not very prudent at all for MAS.

But why would super duper, high flying Air Asia enter into a share swap with MAS? Especially without a DUE DILIGENCE exercise? Maybe Air Asia does need to enter into a share swap with MAS in a hurry. They bought 200 Airbuses last year and are cutting routes at the same time. That does not sound right at all.

For example MAS has good technical back up and repair facilities for their planes including the Airbus. If it is true that "Singapore not gonna service their Airbus" then of course Air Asia's tie up with MAS will assist in servicing the 200 new Airbuses.

In the past AA has built up a not so good reputation of not paying their bills on time especially to MAS for technical services and Malaysia Airports for airport facilities. I hope this share swap does not result in MAS holding the short end of the stick again. MAS is a taxpayer owned airline.

Somehow I get the feeling that the MAS - Air Asia share swap is the beginning of another flight into the unknown for MAS. I also get the feeling the folks in Air Asia have their flight paths mapped out a bit more carefully.

AA's business model based on breakneck growth may have to be relooked. The pace is perhaps really breaking their neck. I think there is a huge market that really appreciates the services provided by AA. Some fine tuning and clear focus on better delivery should take them to greater heights.

Yes, AirAsia does have a reputation for stretching out their payables. While they take money from you upfront, they will take eons just to give money back to you when due.

My biggest worry is aircraft maintenance. They actually run their Airbuses ragged, and once the Airbus warranties are over (3 years?), then how is AirAsia to pay for the major inspection in 5 years ? Of course that's another reason for TonyF to keep buying new aircraft to replace the older ones.

Go to the AirAsia website. When you book online, you must be careful, or they will make you pay for seat allocation, baggage, travel insurance. They also make you pay a convenience fee for using your credit card online.

This is typical sour grapes attitude. In open competition, eeveryone "steals" passengers from their competitors - SIA, Emirates, Thai Airways. You want to stay a lame duck? Then of course you plan your biz with Govt/Taxpayer factored in bailout every 5 years, like you-know-who!

"The frequently heard comment even among Cabinet Ministers is that Air Asia flies in about 10 million visitors to Malaysia annually."

This is an absolutely verifiable fact. Otw, why would MAHB be building LCCT2 (albeit at inflated cost of $4 billion). Of course I don't buy Bashir's BS that they embarked on 100% expansion based on TF/AA's projections of 45 passengers head count by 2010. Guess which crony contractor got the inflated contract?

I used to book 'free' flights to Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Macau. Since the end of last year, i can't get these so called 'free' flights anymore but they still claim 1 million 'free' flights during their so-called sale. Furthermore they have increased their lowest flight cost to these destinations - it used to be around RM50/- during their 'sale' period. Now, it is touching RM200/-, not including airport taxes, fuel surcharges, luggage etc etc.

So, they have actually been increasing prices slowly. Maybe certain less popular destinations they still maintain their 'free' flights.

I guess the Hong Kong-China sector should be generating good profits for the airline. From a business point of view, cutting unprofitable routes is a correct move. They should also be increasing flights to profitable routes - this has yet to be seen but most probably they could be facing problems with the destination that they want to increase flights; other airlines are also eyeing the same destinations and therefore they may not get the additional flights they want.

However, buying 200 aircraft could be a bit too much for them to swallow unless they can increase flights to popular routes, and they have very limited time to do it.

Dear Tuan Syed,
my million dollar question is 'what the f@#k is the Finance Minister a.k.a Prime Minister is doing about this scandalous issue!!??' SEMUA NYA DUIT RAKYAT yg all the dungus at MAS or AA BOD makan/guna/enjoy.

Apa kena dgn Najib ni? NFC la, MAS la.. semuanya senyap aje. CM Sarawak sampai hari tak letak jawatan mcm dia janji sebelum pilihanraya negeri dulu. Najib senyap juga. Agak mmg betul yg ROSMAH rule the country!

Guna duit EPF beli bank yg bermasaalah. Lepas beli staff bank serta BOD dpt bonus bukan main lumayan.. Pencarum dpt apa??? 6%.. Skrg nak bg lagi duit buat rumah kos rendah kat KL. Mana pegi duit kerajaan dari Petronas sampai kena guna duit EPF!

I think your earlier posting about the broken country tu memang betul!

The man behind AA success is an Iraish guy.He was the x CEO of Ryan Air another budget air from europe.Tony is a good marketier and Kamaruddin a good risk taker.

I dont think AA has problem.Their problem is in AAX.They launch the airline against the advice of their Iraish consultant.Tony told him I want to prove you are wrong.?

He reply you should read a case study on Air Laker.

Ha Ha Ha what a terrible business joke.AA so called success is all about accounting manipulation and make believe marketing strategies. TF has already been signing a lot of guarrantees here and there for AA commitments otherwise HE will be the first one to RUNAWAY and never to be seen again. Too bad for him and I really pity him though but like my kampong people used to say: `Pandai masuk, pandailah cari jalan keluar. Kalau tidak MAMPUSLAH`. Greed is really bad for business..

The Globe: Singapore Airlines’ Balancing Act - Harvard Business Review - http://hbr.org/2010/07/the-globe-singapore-airlines-balancing-act/ar/1

There’s something about Singapore Airlines. Over the past four decades, it has earned a stellar reputation in the fiercely competitive commercial aviation business by providing customers with high-quality service and dominating the business-travel segments.

SIA has won the World’s Best Airline award from Condé Nast Traveler 21 out of the 22 times it has been awarded and Skytrax’s Airline of the Year award three times over the past decade.

What’s not so well known is that despite the quality of its services, SIA is also one of the industry’s most cost-effective operators.

From 2001 to 2009, its costs per available seat kilometer (ASK) were just 4.58 cents. According to a 2007 International Air Transport Association study, costs for full-service European airlines were 8 to 16 cents, for U.S. airlines 7 to 8 cents, and for Asian airlines 5 to 7 cents.

In fact, SIA had lower costs than most European and American budget carriers, which ranged from 4 to 8 cents and 5 to 6 cents respectively…

"Many on the other hand disagree with the suggestion that SIA’s
success is due to the state.

Indeed, high levels of state aid to airlines that have supported many of SIA’s competitors Doganis, 2006) have never been awarded in Singapore, where “deregulation and
encouragement of competition has been the norm.”

According to SIA’s Chairman ‘‘We are unlike many of our competitors: we have
never had government protection, or underwriting of our business
in difficult times. We operate on a commercial basis and our people
know that our customers have a choice of airlines’’. (Singapore
Airlines, 2006).

SIA continues its dual focus on the customer experience though
service excellence and innovation, as well as continuously striving
for efficiency.

According to CEO ChewChoon Seng, "the day we stop having visions or objectives to work to, then that is the day we atrophy. I can assure you we have no intention of doing that."
(Doebele, 2005).

"It is impossible to compare what Singapore has achieved to what all these four countries had so far achieved.

It was actually poor management and corruption, and nothing more. Everything is done for the vested interest of the few."

You be the judge.

Shalom.

I was talking to some people from MH recently who said that the new head of engineering (ex MH turned AA) has been forcing MH to prioritise AA aircraft over everyone else - and it is a well known fact in MH that AA never pays unless forced to. So now they get a free ride at MH's expense? And we wonder why MH is losing billions and billions?

And that story about 10mil pax is true! They take the pax out of KLIA to LCCT... so move from one airport and forced another to be built to accomodate these "new" pax. Wow, smart move.

Hats off to the snakes for taking things this far, and shame on us for letting them keep doing this to us.

The Chinese travel agent said there was no flight by MAS to Mumbai!
They got me a SIA ticket instead. Chinaman tolong Chinaman ma.
From Mumbai I was surprised to get on a MAS flight back.
What tyhe hell!

MAS/AA share swap is nothing more than a scheme to save Air Asia. Tony and Kamaruddin Meranun sit on both AA ans MAS board. Now MAS Head of Engineering, Maintenance & Overhaul (EMO) and CFO are both from Air Asia. Very soon you'll find Tony buying parts of MAS that will be canibalised - Engineering, Cargo and Training. Toy will get to service AA aircraft for free and MAS will have to pay heavily for maintenance. (This will e another "padi kunca" style of deal done by FSG Brahim Flight catering.... MAS sold and buy back service at exhorbitant price. We tax payers are being fleeced by a few gredy people...
