Mali : Americans Bungle French Take Action

Please recall that  I wrote about Mali not too long ago. Its a forsaken Islamic country in the Club of Doom in the Western Sahara.  The jihadists have  attempted to take over the country through brutality and violence.

The fact is the Americans have been messing around in Mali as well. For the past four years they have been training the Malian Army and equipped them with guns and equipment. It is these US trained forces who have now "defected" to the jihadists and are using American weapons to cause chaos. This is another example of typical American bungling (or scheming).

Yesterday the French decided to take over and have conducted airstrikes deep into Mali. They  have also put forces on the ground to retake territory from the jihadists. Here is the New York Times with a lengthy and well written report about Mali. I have truncated it here.

French Strikes in Mali Supplant Caution of U.S.

British soldiers loaded French matériel into a British Army cargo aircraft on Sunday for delivery to Bamako, Mali’s capital.
  • BAMAKO, Mali — French jets struck Islamist strongholds in Mali on Sunday, shoving aside months of international hesitation after every other effort by the United States   failed.
  • For years, United States tried to stem Islamic militancy by conducting ambitious counterterrorism program
  • last four years spent between $520 million and $600 million
  • program stretched from Morocco to Nigeria, American officials heralded Malian military as exemplary partner. Special Forces trained marksmanship, border patrol, ambush drills and counterterrorism skills.
  • Pentagon’s Africa Command concluded that the coup had unfolded too quickly for American commanders or intelligence analysts to detect any clear warning signs.

The Disaster
  • commanders, fruit of years of American training, defected — taking troops, guns, trucks and skills to the enemy. “It was a disaster,”
  • an American-trained officer overthrew Mali’s elected government, half the country to fall into the hands of Islamic extremists.
  • coup led by Capt. Amadou Sanogo, astounded and embarrassed top American military commanders.
  • leaders of these units Tuaregs — the very ethnic nomads overrunning northern Mali.
  • “.American aid turned out not to be useful,” “They made the wrong choice,”
  • relying on a group conducting a 50-year rebellion against the Malian state.
  • American officials scrambling even to get a detailed picture of who they are up against.

French retake initiative
  • Now, the French have entered the war themselves.
  • France decided it could not wait any longer, striking the militants at the front line and deep within their haven.
  • French warplanes went on the offensive, going after training camps, depots and other militant positions far inside Islamist-held territory
  • extremists enforced a harsh brand of Islam on the populace, cutting off hands, whipping residents and forcing tens of thousands to flee.

This is my reading. The collapse of Tunisia, Libya and Egypt and the impending collapse of Syria has totally fired up the Wahhabis operating under the umbrella of Saudi Arabia. Plenty of weapons are now floating around this region - looking for an armed jihad.  Quiet and forgotten Mali is just one recipient of this new Wahhabi inspired jihadi resurgence in the wesern Sahara.

The French are still present in some numbers throughout this part of Africa. I think the Wahhabi jihadists have found a new target to keep them busy.  I think the French will soon be learning all about IEDs (improvised explosive devices) and suicide bombers.

There is a cheaper method to handle these jihadists. But I cant speak about it too freely because too many people will get upset with my suggestions. At the end of the day, there are jihadists everywhere. It involves debunking ancient books.  Boleh terima ke?

In conclusion look at the picture again. French materiel is being loaded onto British airplanes. There are the Americans and the French but what are the British doing in Mali? They are always in the background. The British were also involved in the recent 'peace negotiations' in Minadanao between the Bangsamoro, the Phillipine Government and Malaysia.  The British are always around.  I wonder who handles the Mali desk in London.

Dear Syed,
Perhaps we should be looking at reasons why western powers are messing in the affairs of other countries. Why the US wants to collaborate to retain certain governments or work with terrorists to overthrow some others? They are selective..they know what they want. The centre of attention now seems to be 'muslim' countries.

I think we have the answers as to why this is so. It's best that these powers lay off, stop taking sides or play king-makers in foreign lands. The third world countries are too vulnerable to receive 'help'to retain power or gain over power. M'sia is no exception.

We refer to the claim by Chandra Muzaffar today that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has admitted that he will be a ‘ disastrous Prime Minister’ by amending the Statement of Claim in his lawsuit against Chandra. This is a mischievous, false and absurd statement by Chandra. The High Court Judge in allowing Anwar’s application to amend the statement of claim did not make any ruling that the amendment would amount to an admission. Chandra’s statement is based on his own baseless and illogical interpretation of the court order. In fact, the High Court Judge agreed with Anwar’s lawyers that the amendment would help narrow down issues at the trial.

Chandra is also blowing hot and cold, because he had through his lawyers objected to Anwar’s amendments. Chandra’s objections were rightly rejected by the Judge this morning. If Anwar’s amendments meant that he is admitting to being a ‘disastrous PM’, why then did Chandra object to the amendments? Chandra appears now to be lashing out, after having lost the argument in court this morning.

In this K.L High Court suit, Anwar is suing Chandra for making a false and libellous statement alleging that Anwar had said that he would make sure ‘ temple bells would not ring anymore’. Chandra must answer for this outrageous statement in court. Chandra’s statement today is thus a futile and desperate attempt to distract attention from the real issue in the lawsuit.

In any event, whether Anwar Ibrahim should be Prime Minister is a decision for people of this country to make at the 13th GE. It is not for any court of law to make this decision. Dr Chandra Muzaffar must learn that this is how a real democracy functions.

Anon 9:57,

1. If you could kindly identify yourself it would be good. Otherwise the ordinary person would think that you are acting like a fowl in this area too.

2. This is the wrong Blog post. Can you kindly repost your comments to the correct Blog posting so that readers of that Blog post may see your rebuttal.

Thank you. SAA

I looked up Mali using Google maps this morning and found out Mali is at the slightly north of Africa which is one of the driest place on earth.

Australia's central region is also a dry place.

The rest of the world is pretty much green.

I think generally Malians have been inhaling to many sands.

The british is the is the master of humint (human intelligence). They have been at it for a couple hundred of years. I just wish that the pdrm special branch would have inherited some if not most of their pedigree considering that they were trained by them. But looking at the events since anwar ibrahim's saga, it would seem that either the special
branch is getting sloppy or their political masters are ignoring their advice. The best example would be during IGP Tun Hanif's time whereby information concerning DSAI sexual preference was totally ignored by TDM thus leading to the unprecedented case of the head of SB testifying in the open court. With damaging statements like i will do what the goverment wants me to do and I will lie if necessary, and not to mention that court appearence would never ever happen to other intelligence agencies
Looking forward, it is imperative that the
current political masters be attentive and most importantly, to act decisively on any matters concerning the security of our nation from the perspective of our much respected and capable special branch.
