Well only six out of 29 names on Bujai's List have been dropped. That is only 20% of Bujai's Wish List. Of course Bujai's list did not include Ng Yen Yen and Koh Tsu Koon who have also been dropped.
I think many people (in UMNO, BN and in Government) wish that more candidates had been dropped.
One senior Government man wished more Ministers had been dropped. Another former aide to a Minister says this does not look like a 'Calon Transformasi'. Instead it looks like a 'Calon Kitar Semula'.
Anyway here are some insights I have gathered about a few names.
Shahidan Kassim is back in the running. (deleted). In fact there are many old players still in the game in Perlis. They may be winnable candidates but Perlis surely needs to make way for new faces. Maybe by 2018.
Ibrahim Ali has been the biggest news coming out of Kelantan - he is NOT in the BN list. Ibrahim is not even an UMNO member. It was expected that Ibrahim Ali would be fielded as a BN friendly 'Independent' in Pasir Mas. Dr Mahathir had rooted for Ibrahim Ali. But that is not going to happen.
One observer said that Ibrahim Ali could not be fielded under any BN banner because of his remarks which have hurt the Chinese and christian communities. His 'burn the Bible' comments have cost him BN's support.
Ibrahim will n'theless run as an Independent. Not only that, talk is while Ibrahim Ali runs for the Parliamentary seat, his Perkasa boys will also run for the State seats in Pasir Mas. If Ibrahim Ali's boys win the State seats, they will become serious kingmakers in Kelantan if UMNO BN gets close to edging out PAS. Ibrahim Ali is going to be a headache for Tok Pa who is heading the BN in Kelantan.
But it is yet to be seen if Ibrahim can carry Pasir Mas this time. In 2008 he had the secret blessings of Nik Aziz. This may not be available for Ibrahim Ali now.
Dato Mustapa Mohamed is the only BN candidate vying for both a Parliamentary and a State seat. If Tokpa wins Kelantan for BN, Kelantan will become the next El Dorado of Malaysia - the money that will be poured into Kelantan will perhaps outdo Iskandar in Johor. Unfortunately Kelantan people dont understand such things. As one eminent Kelantanese told me they are still pre occupied with 'beruk panjat kelapa'.
The other complaint about the Kelantan line up is that some old faces have been pulled out of retirement since 1999. Calon 'Kitar Semula' again.
Mukhriz Mahathir is the biggest news about Kedah. I hope he carries his State seat easily (Air Itam). If Mukriz and BN win, he will become the next MB of Kedah. Kedah should see another transformation. Maybe another El Dorado on the West Coast. I hope Mukriz will bring mainland Kedah into the 21st century. The Kedah hinterland is becoming another PAS breeding ground.
The second of Bujai's 'Not allowed to contest' candidates Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim is in fact contesting in Baling, Kedah. Many people are just unhappy that this guy is a candidate.
He has succesfully thwarted the other BN choice for Baling Dr Mashitah Ibrahim - our own version of the Madonna (Virgin Mary). Folks say as late as Sunday Mashitah's name was in the list. Then interventions happened and Azeez got his name put in and Mashitah was taken out.
In 2004 Mashitah won the Baling seat for the BN with a 2000 vote margin over the PAS' Taib Azamuddin - the former Imam of the Masjid Negara. Then in 2008 Mashitah was replaced by Azeez. Azeez lost the seat to a PAS candidate by a huge number of votes. Folks say that even now Mashitah has a much better chance than Azez of winning this seat - say a 50/50 chance. Compared to Mashitah they say that Azeez has a smaller chance of winning Baling. They expect that this seat will be lost to PAS.
There is something very interesting happening in Penang. The BN is fielding a five-star candidate against Anwar Ibrahim in Permatang Pauh. He is local boy (Penanti) Lt..Col Dr Hj Mazlan Ismail. Mazlan holds two degrees in Electronic Engineering from the UK and a PhD in Intellectual Capital Management. He is also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve (Signals).
He is a product of Telekom Malaysia and holds a senior position in the GLC. He is also a former PAS member and was PAS Director of Elections for Penang in 1999 and 2004. He has since joined UMNO and seems to be a quietly rising star. I think this is also the reason why Anwar Ibrahim chose to run away from Permatang Pauh to Perak.
Actually Anwar Ibrahim does not need to lose - even if Dr Mazlan can reduce Anwar Ibrahim's majority significantly it will be the end of Anwar Ibrahim's career. But I think Anwar Ibrahim is going to lose to Dr Mazlan Ismail. This will be the end of his political career.
Reezal Merican Naina Merican - on Bujai's 'not allowed to contest' list is replacing Slumberjack in Kepala Batas. Anything that is connected to Slumberjack smells bad. The less said the better. Talk is Slumberjack agreed to withdraw as the candidate in Kepala Batas if his son in law was allowed to contest in Rembau in Negeri Sembilan.
Zulkifli Noordin - Shah Alam. Not very pro-BN Shah Alam people called me and said Zul will lose in Shah Alam. They say he will not get the Indian vote. Zulkifli Noordin has to work hard over the next 17 days to go around the entire Shah Alam looking for Tamil Indians and shaking each and everyone of their hands. I hope someone gets this message across to Zul Noordin. The Tamil Indians are the kingmakers. I hope Zulkifli Noordin will also be able to differentiate the Tamil Indians from other types of Indians. Kalau tak tahu beza nanti payah sikit bro.
My view is Zul still has a chance. He has the gift of the gab (boleh cakap lah) and he can tell a story. His weakness is Zul is not sufficiently exposed to a multicultural audience. He is exactly like Anwar Ibrahim when he was in ABIM - walking around with a blinkered 'religious view' of cabbages, tomatoes and everything else on earth. The kopiah permanently on his head does indicate some religious confusion but he is relatively clean, straight forward and can be a people friendly person. I have met him a couple of times.
Who will be Menteri Besar of Selangor if the BN wins? There are apparently FOUR candidates. I think that is more than enough choice there. Talking about FOUR possible BN candidates for MB of Selangor is also quite clever. Less chance of cah-keting compared to say if there were only two candidates.
Azalina Othman Said - Pengerang. When he heard her name mentioned an ex-Pengerang resident said 'Arghhhh...arghhhh'. Not good news. Azalina will win easily in Pengerang. I hope Azalina realises that times have changed. The old ways cannot sustain.
Ghani Othman in Gelang Patah has been sent on quite a kamikaze mission. If he loses to Lim Kit Siang that is the end of Ghani Othman. Even if he wins in Gelang Patah, Ghani leaves Johor - he goes to Parliament. Either way he is out of the State.
Ghani Othman has done a lot for Johor. Throughout his FOUR terms Johor has prospered continuously. And there have not been any major controversies in Johor throughout Ghani Othman's tenure as the MB. And dont forget that even Kumpulan Perubatan Johor blossomed under Ghani as MB. Jangan lupa orang yang telah berbakti dan berbudi kepada kita. Ghani is a polite man who has worked hard for Johor. I hope the Chinese community especially in Gelang Patah will show good support for their Menteri Besar. I hope he wins Gelang Patah and finds a place at the Federal level.
The best news that is coming out of Melaka is that Chief Minister Ali Rustam is coming to Putrajaya. Melaka's loss is going to be the Federal Government's gain. Ali Rustam is being given a Parliamentary seat. If he wins I hope the workaholic Ali Rustam is appointed to a Senior Position in the Cabinet.
Under his stewardship Ali Rustam has steered Melaka to become the first OECD standards compliant 'Negeri Maju' in Malaysia in 2010. That is 10 years ahead of the national level Vision 2020.
