Appointed To The MACC
By Syed Akbar Ali
I was at the Prime Minister's office this morning, along with a number of other folks, to receive my 'watikah' or letter of appointment to the MACC's Consultancy Panel on Corruption Prevention and Education.
.
The official term is Ahli Panel Perundingan Dan Pencegahan Rasuah, Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia (SPRM). Its a two year appointment that runs from 25/2/2011 till 24/2/2013. The appointment is by the Prime Minister.
.
The MACC first called me about two weeks ago, quite early in the morning as I was having breakfast at home. There were 12 people, including myself, who were appointed to the Consultancy Panel this morning. We also met the other serving members.
.
The other folks who received their appointments today were Prof Dr. Eng. Chin Yew Sin, Datuk Marimuthu Nadason, Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing, Haji Anis Yusal Yusoff, Dato Seri Azman Ujang, Dato Prof. Ishak Tambi Kechik, Dato Wong Chun Wai, Datuk David Chua, Dr Zainal Abidin Abdul Majid, Prof Dato Dr Abdul Rahman Hj Embong and Datuk Johan Jaafar.
.
It was a fairly well spread out distribution representing consumers associations, NGOs, universities, media and others. I am simply listed as 'Blogger, OutSyed The Box' which I take as recognition of the Bloggers and their contribution to the public discourse.
.
I wish to thank the Prime Minister and the MACC for this opportunity to serve the public. The highest form of service is indeed public service. I hope we can do good through this appointment.
.
Do read Blogger Another Brick In The Wall's take on my appointment. You can see his Blog on my Blog List to the right of the screen. I am also most cognisant of the 'smithereens' reminder too. Thank you for the threatening words. Rocky has also just posted his take on my appointment. on Rocky's Bru. Also on my Blog List. Thank you Bro. I also wish to thank some of you who have already said kind words. Thank you for your support.
.
As Ahli Panel Perundingan we will assist the MACC in a number of areas. This will include:

Libya : Khaddafy Needs An Exit Option
By Syed Akbar Ali
.
"President Barack Obama said the suffering and bloodshed in Libya "is outrageous and it is unacceptable," and he directed his administration to prepare a full range of options"
.
The Libyan protests began on 15th February 2011. Egypt's revolution took 18 days to kick out Hosni Mubarak. Lets see how many more days Khaddafy will last. The statement by Obama is significant - he wants the Pentagon to prepare a full range of options. When an American President says something like that, it means Khaddafy's days are really numbered.
.
Things will settle down quicker if Khaddafy can be provided a place to run into exile. The problem with Khaddafy is he has few exit options. He has spent a lifetime insulting the other Arab rulers - sometimes directly in their faces at international Arab summits. So it is not likely that Khaddafy will be welcome in say Saudi Arabia or Jordan.
.
The Italians have special interest in Libya since they colonised North Africa not too long ago. Khaddafy also once held a large stake in Fiat, the Italian motorcar company. Maybe they can find him a quiet home on the Island of Lampedusa, 250 km from Libya. Or maybe some well guarded walled mansion in Rome. I am sure Khaddafy and his sons have enough billions stashed away to pay for such a retirement. I think this Libyan episode will come to a quick conclusion if someone can prepare a retirement home for Khaddafy.
.
This is a lot cheaper and easier than embargoes, sanctions, no fly zones and such that are being contemplated now.
.
The other option is Mindanao. Khaddafy has helped the Bangsamoro quite substantially in the past. Gave them money, weapons and stuff. Maybe they can install him in a mango plantation on Basilan Island? The US Marines have a permanent base there too - they can provide security.
.
The end is nigh.

The Middle East, The Bible & 'Memperbanyakkan Masalah'

By Syed Akbar Ali
Well Tobruk in Libya fell yesterday. I was listening to Muammar Ghaddafi live on Al Jazeera last nite. He was quite incoherent. When he said ‘haazi bilaadi’ (this is my country), I think he really meant it. Macam bapak dia punya negeri.
I also received a phone call last nite from a friend. He just called to say that those things that I had said in my book about the Islamic countries collapsing is coming true. My second book is called ‘Malaysia And The Club of Doom – The Collapse of the Islamic Countries’. It was published five years ago in 2006. My dear wife says my predictions are more accurate than Nostradamus.
.
The fact is there is no need for ‘Nostradamus’. Looking at the Islamic countries, speaking to Muslims everyday, looking at their non dependence on logic, looking at their divorce from competition and the free market, looking at their over dependence on the Government giving them jobs and sustaining them, looking at the fanatic grip and influence of their many, many versions of “religion” in their daily lives – I cannot help seeing it as clear as daylight that they are all doomed. These are standard observations in almost all Islamic countries. There is no need to be a Nostradamus. I could just see it coming. Sorry folks. I don’t know how else to say this.
.
Yes I was very pessimistic about the fate of the Islamic countries in that book. Sad to say I am still very pessimistic about the fate of the Islamic countries. For Malaysia I am very pessimistic about the fate of the Muslims in this country.
.
My book has sold over 13,000 copies. That is not bad at all for an English language book written by a Malaysian author in a non English speaking country. I don’t want to brag or boast or toot my own horn, but a few people have suggested that my book be made required reading in Universities and colleges in Malaysia. Yes I agree, very strongly. No other Muslim Malaysian author has written a book similar to ‘Malaysia And The Club of Doom – The Collapse of the Islamic Countries’. And now many of the things I have said in the book have come true. Especially the Muslims should read and understand what I said in that book.
.
There are many, many reasons why the Islamic countries are facing serious problems. The cancer is very, very deep. Yes they can get rid of Hosni Mubarak, they can get rid of Khaddafy, they can change the Government in Bahrain. But this will NOT solve their problems overnite. God knows, these countries may become even more worse.
.
Here are some facts about Islamic countries. This is about their population explosion problem. Malaysia is NOT excluded:
.
Population Explosion in the Muslim World
By Nidhal Guessoum, an astrophysicist and Professor of Physics at American University of Sharjah.
· The population of Egypt has increased from 44 million to 84 million people in the past 30 years! According to World Bank statistics, it is expected to reach 130 million in 2050. That is undoubtedly a stunning explosion.
· Algeria’s population increased from 19 to 35 million between 1980 and 2010 and is expected to reach 50 million in 2050;
· Iran’s population increased from 39 to 74 million in the past 30 years and is expected to reach 96 million in 2050;
· Pakistan’s population increased from 83 to 173 million in the past 30 years and is expected to reach 321 million in 2050;
· Even Malaysia (a multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and well-managed country) is seeing the same doubling of population trend: from 14 to 28 million in the past 30 years, reaching 39 million by 2050;
· Saudi Arabia : the figures show even more staggering explosions (from 9 to 26 million in the past 30 years, reaching 42 million in 2050)
May I add that Indonesia has 235 million people in 2010. In 2000 their population was 206 million. At current growth, their population is expected to hit 470 million by 2060.
.
This is yet another serious problem facing the Islamic countries. Population doubling or tripling in just 30 years. 26 million in Saudi Arabia, 84 million in Egypt, 35 million in Algeria, 74 million in Iran, 173 million in Pakistan and 28 million in Malaysia.
.
Are there enough jobs, economic opportunities, infrastructure facilities (schools, hospitals, roads, water, electricity) for all these people? In Pakistan some parts of the country get electricity and water on only certain times of the day or some days of the week.
.
Why do the Islamic countries suffer (yes the word is suffer) such huge population explosions? Well many Muslims do NOT believe in family planning or birth control. The religious scholars are usually against birth control. (I am NOT referring to abortion – I am against abortion too).
.
The religious scholars have a saying which says ‘memperbanyakkan ummah’ or increasing the population of the ummah. In Biblical language it is the same as saying “go forth and multiply”.
.
Not surprisingly Old Testament Christians, like the Catholics, still say the same thing. Until today the Catholic Church believes strongly that birth control or family planning is unchristian. And it is a proven fact that Catholic families have larger numbers of children than Protestants. The Vatican has never fully endorsed family planning and birth control.
.
Why is this so? Because the Bible says so. Here are some references from the Bible. Yes these are from the Old Testament and yes many Christians don’t believe the Old Testament anymore but the Vatican and the Catholic Church may disagree. But I am not here to pass judgement on the Bible or Christians. I am merely pointing out that these beliefs have a precedent in the Bible.
.
Genesis 1:28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."
.
Genesis 9:1 Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.
.
Genesis 35:11 And God said to him, "I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase in number.
.
My view is these verses can be generally termed the ‘go forth and multiply’ verses of the Bible. It is the equivalent of the ‘memperbanyakkan ummah’ saying. The Bible also tells its followers to increase their number through birth. Make more babies.
.
Yes you can make babies but who is going to feed them? Clothe them? Educate them? Jobs are already scarce, food prices are going up, the economies in the Islamic countries are less productive. So how are they going to provide a good life for six children or nine children?
.
The religious people say God will provide for them. This is true. The Quran does say :
.
[Surah 17:31] You shall not kill your children due to fear of poverty. We provide for them, as well as for you. Killing them is a gross offense.
.
The Quran never said that it is wrong to have fewer children or to plan your family. God never said that you must have two children, six children, seven children or nine children. The Quran remains silent on the numbers. The Quran says it is evil to kill your children but nowhere does the Quran say that you must “go forth and multiply” at all. The saying “memperbanyakkan ummah” is extra Quranic, it is NOT from the Quran.
.
Even a religious scholar must understand that the more mouths you have to feed, it means more children will have to make do with less. Imagine satu ekor ikan kembong shared by six people. Ayah makan ekor, ibu makan kepala and the kids can pick at the middle.
.
What about education? We in Malaysia are lucky because ada duit minyak Petronas. Buku teks percuma, yuran sekolah percuma, university percuma and so on. But even that is coming to an end. With 30 million population, even Petronas oil money will not be enough to ‘bagi percuma’ forever.
.
Look at Indonesia. They have more oil money than us – but with 235 million population, the Government cannot give them things “percuma”. They cannot afford it. Not enough money to “bagi semua benda free”. What if our oil money runs out? Macam mana kalau minyak pula habis? Macam mana nak dapat buku teks free, yuran free, university free dan sebagainya?
.
This is another reason why the Islamic countries are doomed. They are facing a tremendous population explosion. Their religious beliefs prevent them from embarking on good family planning. As a result they will have four, five, six or ten kids per family. The children will be fed no doubt, but as I said ‘enam orang share se ekor ikan kembong lah’.
.
OK lah buku teks dapat free, yuran sekolah free, hospital pun sabsidi. But what about piano lessons for the kids? Computer lessons? Music class? Ballet? Extra sports activities? Books, magazines, computers, lap tops. Taking the kids on holidays overseas? Or going for a domestic holiday? Forget it. Semua tak boleh.
.
Travelling opens up our mind. If teenagers travel overseas, they see and learn so much. My two young sons are better people for having seen half a dozen different countries and understanding more about the world at large. But all this costs money. Kalau lah anak enam orang atau lapan orang, how are we going to take eight kids on a foreign holiday?
.
Then when they grow up, will they be able to compete? Can they get good jobs? Can they set up businesses that can compete without tongkat and sabsidi? Or can they only work for the Government sector? Or will they become low level ‘manpower’ for the Japanese and the American foreign companies?
.
“Go forth and multiply” (which sounds so similar to 'memperbanyakkan ummah') is another belief that is found in the Bible. There is no such saying in the Quran.
.
Folks, for the Muslim countries it is not as simple as dumping Hosni Mubarak, throwing out Khaddafy or changing the government. That is important too. That is the first step. But the Muslims have a much longer road ahead. They really have to start thinking now. Using the mind, that is the real frontier the Muslims have to overcome - to think logically and to use intellect, minus "religious" obfuscations.

Benghazi Falls
I think the last time anyone said something like that (Benghazi falls) would have been in the Second World War when Field Marshall Erwin Rommels Afrika Korps were running around Tobruk, El Alamein and such. Benghazi in Libya's east has been taken by tribes not friendly with Muammar Khaddafy. Even in the capital Tripoli there is fighting and protests still going on.
Khaddafy's son has promised a "bloodbath" - a total wrong choice of words from a "ini bapak saya punya negeri" type of dungu.
When I blogged about the TUDM evacuating our students from Egypt a couple of weeks back, I did suggest that so long as our planes were in the air, they may as well evacuate Malaysians from other Club of Doom countries in the neighborhood. Well it appears that there are 190 Malaysians in Libya who will have to be evacuated too. May I advise Malaysians in Yemen, Bahrain, Algeria and perhaps even Saudi Arabia to pack their bags and be on standby - just in case lah.
Oil has already gone up by over a Dollar. More uncertainty is on the horizon. I am waiting to see if this mass nervous breakdown will spread to Saudi Arabia. It is bound to happen.
In Saudi, the oil reserves are mostly in the East, which is also where the Saudi Shiahs live. Now, Bahrain which is just off the same eastern coast of Saudi Arabia, is also 70% Shiah. So if Bahrain also "falls" those two busy body Iranian ships that are now transiting the Suez Canal may do a quick u-turn. If the Shiahs come to power in a more "democratic" Bahrain, I think the Saudi goose wil get cooked sooner than expected. The Shiahs in the eastern part of Saudi may become like the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka who received support from Tamil Nadu across the Palk Straits. In this case a Shiah Bahrain may become a source of much pain for the Saudis.
The Oo of Oo Ba Doo who rules Bahrain is Sunni. They are a very, very small ruling elite minority who are propped up almost entirely by the next door Saudis. Isnt that interesting. There is also a significant Shia presence in Yemen.

UMNO Is The Downfall Of The Majority Malays As A Viable Race?
By Syed Akbar Ali
I received the following article from one of my Blog readers. Thank you bro. It says this article has been floating around the Net for some time. It also says that the writer of this article is an “enlightened Malay”. From the face of it I don’t think a Malay wrote this article.
I have read it and there are various parts of it that I agree with completely but there are also many parts of it which I don’t agree with.
.
UMNO Is The Downfall Of The Majority Malays As A Viable Race
.
Here are my comments. Of course the ruling party for the past 54 years has to bear the burden of the blame for ALL our shortcomings. I say ALL, because after 54 years UMNO and the BN just simply cannot say that it is not their fault.
But the fault lies not entirely on UMNO because the article here says it is the Malays who have failed to achieve their spot in the country. Don’t the Malays themselves deserve the blame for this too? Why just blame UMNO?
The article is titled "UMNO Is The Downfall Of The Majority Malays . . " OK. So what about the minority “non-UMNO” Malays? Have they prospered better than the majority ‘UMNO” Malays? The PAS has been ruling Kelantan for 20 years now. Have they prospered? Nope. They are worse off.
.
There are Malays across the border in Thailand – outside the clutches of both UMNO and PAS. How do they compare with the Malays under the clutches of UMNO just across the frontier? You must make the comparison because in 1957, there was not much difference between say Baling, Kuala Nerang, Tumpat and Patani, Narathiwat and Satun.
What about Malays under the PAP in Singapore? Have they done well? At last after 45 years, a Malay has become a Brigadier General in the Singapore Armed Forces. OK but what about Malay businesses? Yes the Malays sell hygienic kuih Melayu in Geylang but that is because Malays still hang out in Geylang. Indians also sell hygienic Indian sweets and thosai in Little India in Serangoon Road in Singapore.
What about Malays in Brunei? How many Malays own and run banks in Brunei Darus Salam? Are there large Malay businesses in Brunei? My wife’s grandpa set up a large pharmacy business there since the 60s or something. The business is still there, run by the third generation. Tapi itu mamak turun kapal lah. Pharmacy bumiputra Melayu mana?
Then lets cross the ditch into Indonesia. Itu pun Melayu juga. No need to say much lah. UMNO has no sway there. No need to say much ok. A lot of them are here trying to make a living. Folks I wrote the book "Malaysia And The Club of Doom". Yes we too can be doomed. But not because of the Malays. I blame it on the religion.
Please read the newspapers. Yesterday four more people were killed in Bahrain. Yemen riots, Libya riots. Iran riots. Pakistan dirt poor. Punjab is divided between Pakistan and India. On one side is Muslim Pakistan Punjab where they are dirt poor. On the other side, are Karpal Singh’s countrymen in Sikh and Hindu Indian Punjab. They are among the wealthiest farmers in India.
Muslim Punjab dirt poor. Indian Punjab rich. Same soil, same language, same chappati, same water, same turban, same Bangra and same lembu. The only difference is the religion. So don’t blame UMNO and the BN.
And don’t forget the non Malays. The article does not say that the non Malays, especially the Chinese have failed to achieve successes in Malaysia (which are mostly measured by economic yardsticks in this article). The Chinese have done much better than the Malays and are poised to do even better. We have numerous Chinese success stories. And Indians too. Well done and Godspeed to the Chinese and others.
But the Chinese too prospered under the same UMNO and the same BN who were in charge. So it is entirely correct to say that policies fostered by UMNO and BN have helped prosper Chinese more than Malays. Or putting it another way, the Chinese and many Indians have prospered under UMNO and BN.
(My personal view is that the Chinese and Indians could have prospered more, if they had learnt to better cooperate with the largest market base in the country ie the Malays and other bumiputras. You all have really missed even more opportunities guys. Too much time was wasted in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s catering more to your own communities – that is a small market. Its not too late. Better late than never. Here is the secret to success - teach and share).
The article also complaints about letting in too many Indonesians, Rohingyas, Banglas, Nepalis, Afghans, Iranians, Africans. I agree here. We must do away with the Indons, Banglas and others.
The writer also laments that so many Chinese and Indians have migrated out of the country. This is where I feel the writer gives away the secret that he is not a Malay. I say friend, aren’t the Chinese and Indians immigrants too? If the writer thinks that it is a bad thing for the Malays to let in Indons and the Banglas, then pray tell how was it a good thing for the Malays to have let in Chinese and Indians not too long before in the 20th century? Be fair lah. Do not lose your objectivity.
.
The Malays even gave citizenship to two million non Malays. This immediately cut down the Malay demographic percentage from 80% down to just over 50%. Never before in the history of the world has any community ever done a dumb thing like that. Why doesn't someone nominate the Malays in Malaysia for the Nobel Peace Prize or something? Come on folks, be fair ok.
I hope people will stop pointing the racist finger at UMNO or the Malays. Rest assured the Indons (who are also Malays) may not be going back but neither are the Banglas, the Afghans, many Chinese from China too, the Mongolians, the Iranians, the Nepalis, the Myanmars, the Filipinos are all here to stay. Not all of them are voters - yet. I think they are here to stay – permanently. I received email from an Iranian who has been here since the 90s. He says he loves this country. Obviously he is staying here too.
I feel that this may develop into more problems for Malaysia in the future (what I mean are more racial problems) – as long as the Malays do not learn to compete. As long as the Malays are kept down by their religious beliefs, like all the other Club of Doom countries, and they cannot compete, then the introduction of more homo sapien sub species (Banglas, Nepalis, Iranians etc) will only complicate matters more.
.
I am not looking at a purely racial angle (that would be racist) but I am pointing out socio economic booby traps which will then magnify the racial differences even more, and more and more. New problems will crop up. All these problems will ONLY disappear if the Malay Muslims learn to compete. Thats all we have to learn to do. Compete.
In this regard, we are not hitting the right target. The fault lies not in UMNO, BN or the Malays as a race. The problem lies in the religion, or the interpretation thereof. What ails the Malays ails ALL the Muslims around the world. It does not matter whether you are a Malay, an Indian, a Pakistani, a Bangla, a Yemeni, an Egyptian or whatever. As long as you are a Muslim, chances are you are poor and uncompetitive.
Is this too difficult to figure out - in Egypt they had Hosni Mubarak for 31 years. One race, one language, same food, 90% Islam - yet the Muslims are dirt poor. In Malaysia, 54 years UMNO, multi racial, multi lingual, multi religious - the Muslims are OK but struggling, the non Muslims are much better off.
.
You do not need rocket science to see which is the square peg here? Please open eyes and engage brain. It is the religion (or its interpretations). In Egypt the Government may be "secular" but the people and their culture certainly is not.
.
And here is the real problem – if they dive deeper into their understanding of religion, looking for a solution, they will never resurface. They will drown.
As for me, haven’t I told you before , I am a Muslim, first, last and always. I believe in the Quran. So I think I should have a better chance. But people dont want to listen, or give us a chance to talk. If we talk too much, chop chop. Siapa rugi? Bukan saya.
.
