FRIDAY 20/3/2026 NOTES FROM THE QURAN: SURAH 29:6 JIHAD

I have not written my Friday Notes From The Quran column in many months. Here is a quick one. Very brief. 

Surah Maryam 19:26  وَمَن جَـٰهَدَ فَإِنَّمَا يُجَـٰهِدُ لِنَفْسِهِۦٓ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَغَنِىٌّ عَنِ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ   
(wa man jahada fa innama yujaahidu linafsihi innallaaha la ghaniyun anil álameen) 

The two words in red above are JAHADA and YUJAHIDU, both refer JIHAD. 

Here are 12 different English translations of this verse.

  1. Yusuf Ali - And if any strive (JIHAD), they do so (JIHAD) for their own souls: for Allah is free of all needs from all creation
  2. Pickthal - And whosoever striveth (JIHAD), striveth (JIHAD) only for himself, for lo! Allah is altogether Independent of (His) creatures.
  3. Arberry - Whosoever struggles (JIHAD), struggles (JIHAD) only to his own gain; surely God is All-sufficient nor needs any being.
  4. Shakir - And whoever strives hard (JIHAD), he strives (JIHAD) only for his own soul; most surely Allah is Self-sufficient, above (need of) the worlds.
  5. H/K/Saheeh - And whoever strives (JIHAD) only strives (JIHAD) for [the benefit of] himself. Indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.
  6. Malik - He that strives (JIHAD), does that (JIHAD) for his own soul; for Allah is certainly transcendent and beyond any need of the worlds.
  7. Maulana Ali - And whoever strives hard (JIHAD), strives (JIHAD) for himself. Surely Allah is Self-sufficient, above (need of) (His) creatures.
  8. Free Minds - And whosoever strives (JIHAD) then he is only striving for himself (JIHAD); for God is in no need of the worlds.
  9. Qaribullah -  He who strives (JIHAD), strives for himself (JIHAD). Allah is the Rich, independent of the worlds.
  10. Hilali/Khan  -  And whosoever strives (JIHAD), he strives (JIHAD) only for himself. Verily, Allah is free of all wants from the Alameen
  11. Mohammad Shaikh Literal - And who struggled/exerted (JIHAD), so but he struggles/exerts (JIHAD) for his self, that God (is) rich from the (not in need of) creation all together/(universe)
  12. Khalifa - Those who strive, strive for their own good. GOD is in no need of anyone.

My Comment: Whoever undertakes JIHAD then he undertakes JIHAD only for himself
because surely Allah is rich/self sufficient and beyond any need of the worlds
