The White House has again made announcements over ending the war in Ukraine but this time things are really nearing a close. The reason is really very simple. The Armed Forces of the Ukraine are close to collapse. Over the past 24 hours the Russians overran three villages and two urban centers in one zone alone - taking about 80 sq km of territory in 24 hours.
The Russians are now unstoppable. The Russians have been conducting a very carefully planned war. They lost the Kursk salient to Ukraine (over 1000 sq km) for about six months. Then they took it all back in just 14 days. In the process decimating tens of thousands of Ukrainian troops and destroying hundreds of tanks and artillery pieces.
Russia does not want to unnecessarily sacrifice the lives of Russian soldiers for territory they may have to cede later in a peace deal. So whatever territory Russia takes now they will likely keep. Todate they are still rounding up Russian speaking areas of Ukraine.
Although Odessa is more than a third Russian speaking and also a major strategic asset the Russians are not making any major push towards Odessa. Odessa could end the war immediately. But in any truce Ukraine must have Odessa - their only seafront on the Black Sea. So what is the point in Russia getting its soldiers killed to capture Odessa.
