You may be wondering why I have not been posting much about local news or local stories lately. Well its deadly boring. The level of stupidity is becoming unbelievable.
I just received yet another scammer phone call. These scammers are really running wild. It is as if there is no one to stop them. This latest caller said he was from a gomen agency - but calling me on his mobile phone. Which is a dead giveaway. When I asked him how come he was not calling me from his office telephone his reply was that their office phones CANNOT call out. Maybe the fellow was a graduate of a sekolah kebangsaan or sekolah tahfiz.
Recently some "protesters" were arrested by the police here. Some of their brothers and sisters were also arrested by the Israelis. Surprisingly (or not) the same gomen that arrested them here made efforts to secure the release of their brothers and sisters who were arrested by the Israelis. Can anyone explain? Isnt it dramatic? Or is it just drama?
There is a general breakdown going on. My late father (he died 40 years ago) used to say that 'other people are making a yeoman's effort'. What is a yeoman's effort?
That is what a yeoman's effort refers to. My father was born in 1919 and finished high school somewhere around 1935. He studied in English at the Schwartz High School in Ramnad in India. Old British style. APJ Abdul Kalam the former Indian president and rocket scientist studied at the same school. The other thing my father used to say was what Churchill had said after defeating Hitler in the Second World War - 'we have killed the wrong pig'. People have indeed been killing the wrong pig for a very long time.
Other people are indeed making a yeoman's effort and they are pulling ahead by leaps and bounds. We are so fortunate to have so many of these people around. While thousands upon thousands are opting to become scammers (on the phone, in politics, in "business", in the 'Service' bla bla) there are sufficient numbers who are bent on making an honest living and they work very hard at doing it well. So the country can still function well.
You want to fix the car just go around and find someone who can do the job without ripping you off too much. I want to change something in the car and Ah Wah my mechanic will say, 'Tak payah tukar. Boleh pakai lagi'. This happened a few times. I have given Ah Wah a top review on Google.
You need to eat, buy stuff etc there are a variety of choices. You choose. Then you can rate them on Google. Nowadays you can check everything on Google maps. Before we arrive somewhere the wife will check the reviews with Google maps. Most important is how many reviews are available. If it is below TEN reviews forget it. If the reviews run into the hundreds and thousands and there is a 4 star rating or better, plus the comments are ok, then you will not go wrong.
Recently we visited a kopitiam in Seremban. The almost thousand Google reviews were good. True enough before we entered the girls opened the door for us. 'How many sir?' with a smile. Then we were slow with the QSR menu. Another girl popped up. 'What would you like?' in perfect English, in Seremban. Then she did the QSR order like in 30 seconds. The tissues and the chili sauce were self service - on the counter. Another lass saw that we were "elderly" - so she hopped, skipped and jumped to and from the counter bringing tissues, the sauces etc. I gave them a top review on Google.
So while others get up each morning to scam, steal, cheat, con, fool, lie, talk like idots, bully, be lazy monkeys and above all BE STUPID, there are millions of others who wake up in the morning and go out to earn an honest day's living - doing useful and good things in the society. They make a yeoman's effort. And that is what keeps the country going and more importantly on an even keel. Without them the country would have collapsed a long time ago.
But they will always be around. Working hard and being useful citizens. And the parasites will continue feeding off them.
