Well that has been going on for over two years now. Russia has been steadily gaining territory in Ukraine. But Ukraine is a large country - over 600,000 sq km in size. So at 10 sq km per day it will take Russia 164 years to take all of Ukraine. It is not going to take that long and neither is Russia interested in taking all of Ukraine. Most certainly Russia will not be invading Poland, Germany, France, Belgium and London for a very, very long time to come.
Perhaps this is why Mr Putin is dragging out this war. He has no intention of crossing the English Channel and reaching London in six months.
This is actually a religious and civilisational war. The Eastern Orthodoxy (Orthodox Christianity) made up of the Russian Orthodox Church headed by the Patriarch of Moscow and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church which has historical ties to the Russian Orthodox Church are at odds with each other. It is market share - either Coke or Pepsi. No Copsi or Pepcoke allowed.
The major modern conflict between these two churches intensified over Ukraine.
In 2019, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople recognized the Orthodox Church of Ukraine as independent from Moscow.
The Russian Orthodox Church rejected this decision, arguing:
- Constantinople exceeded its authority,
- Ukraine belongs to Moscow’s historic church territory.
As a result:
- the Russian Orthodox Church severed communion with Constantinople,
- and the dispute became one of the biggest schisms in modern Orthodoxy.
So you see the Ukrainian conflict is also a religious jihad.
Russia is now increasing air strikes against the Ukrainian capital Kiev and Odessa which is Ukraine's major port on the Black Sea.
Mr Putin insists on fighting this low intensity war. This is not a war with large movements of battalions, divisions and armies. It has become a drone and robot war - with both sides utilising all sorts of unmanned vehicles (aerial, land and sea) to strike individual units of the enemy (tanks, vehicles, troops and static targets like industrial plants and military bases). The Russians do gain about 10 sq km of territory every day.
