The political consequences depend on separate factors: the legal status of Najib's convictions, public perceptions of the present government, and the electoral calculations of UMNO, DAP, PKR and their potential allies.
1. The House Arrest until 2028 and Najib's 15-Year Sentence
Najib's house arrest arrangement concerns his existing SRC International sentence, ending on 23 August 2028. His latest 15-year jail sentencing (in Nov 2025), under the 1MDB conviction remains under appeal.
If the appeal succeeds: The 15-year sentence could be overturned, reduced, or otherwise altered, depending on the court's decision. If the appeal fails: The courts and relevant authorities will determine how the new sentence is implemented, including its relationship to the latest house arrest. This will be new territory.
The House arrest does not automatically cancel the separate conviction (15 years sentence) or guarantee that Najib will avoid serving the additional sentence.
2. Impact on DAP
Anthony Loke has announced his intention to resign as Transport Minister, while DAP's other ministers will remain in the Unity Government. I will term this as the DAP's wayang. The average Malaysian can also see through the wayang.
The Pardon does put DAP in a pickle. The DAP must balance its stated commitment to accountability and anti-corruption, especially over 1MDB with its continued participation in the government. The e-invoicing system and now the imposition of 30% bumiputera equity in tuition centers is highly unpopular with Chinese voters. The Najib pardon (house arrest) only makes things worse for the DAP. The DAP will pay a price. The Pardon will blow over but the e-invoicing and the tuition center issue will sting for a long time.
Chinese voters will view DAP's continued cooperation with the PH as inconsistent with its anti-corruption position. The party will face disgruntled voters.
3. Impact on PKR
The pardon creates a political accountability issue for PKR. Basically cakap tak serupa bikin aka hypocrisy. Since they have emphasised anti-corruption. It has been a farce.
The Pardon is certainly inconsistent with PKR's anti-corruption sing songs. The public is also aware it is unfair to tai chi the Pardon upon the YDP Agong. The YDP Agong has little choice. Under the law he has to abide by the advise of the Pardon's Board.
At the polls, PKR will likely suffer a fate worse than the DAP.
4. Impact on UMNO
Najib's house arrest provides his supporters with a renewed political focal point although he remains legally restricted. It will increase internal discussion within UMNO about leadership change, party identity and its relationship with the Unity Government. Should they or should they not continue their cooperation with the PKR and DAP? Zahid Hamidi's tenure as president of UMNO will likely come under scrutiny. The pardon will not add any new votes from UMNO's die hard supporters. But the pardon will chase away fence sitters among the Malay voters.
Too many Malays do not like the Pardon.
5. Najib, Hishamuddin Hussein Onn, Zahid Hamidi and UMNO Leadership
Najib's homecoming (although under house arrest) will certainly stir up internal UMNO discussions about leadership change and the party's future direction. Since 2008 UMNO has suffered its worse political fortunes. The party needs a complete overhaul of everything. Will they ever listen to Syed Akbar Ali? Certainly UMNO needs a complete leadership change and a complete restructuring of how the party is organised.
Najib coming home does strengthen Hishammuddin Hussein's standing in Umno. And it automatically weakens Zahid Hamidi. Hishamudin Hussein also hails from Johor and enjoys good relations with the Sultan and the Royal House of Johor. They have a long history. It does not harm anyone to have good friends in high places.
If the party members want to see UMNO survive, a leadership change in UMNO is critical. Not only that but UMNO needs a complete reset.
6. PAS, Parti Wawasan, UMNO and Electoral Cooperation
A pardon that changes Najib's and UMNO's political standing could affect negotiations among parties considering any future electoral pacts. It is no secret that PAS, UMNO and Parti Wawasan are looking forward to electoral pacts.
If UMNO believes its bargaining position has improved, it might seek greater influence over seat allocation or coalition terms. Conversely, PAS and other partners will have to adjust their own electoral calculations.
CONCLUSION: Najib's house arrest has immediate consequences for coalition relations and party positioning. Both the present coalition as well as future coalitions. The Pardon is viewed negatively by a vast majority of ordinary Malaysians and voters. No one likes it. Once again the elites are enjoying life.
