Jangan Jadi Empat Kali Bodoh. Ingat Tak Pak Arab Tipu Dr Mahathir Beratus Juta Ringgit Dulu (Duit Kita)?

Here is an old story. Kebodohan awal.

  • Pak Arab inventor associated with gomen-backed research company
  • Ínvolved hundreds of millions of ringgit in gomen financing and allegations about the company's technology, management and use of funds.
  • Funding: Gomen committed loan of RM437m.
  • By early 2005, RM228 million had reportedly been disbursed.
  • 2005: Allegations of approximately RM50m fraud, mismanagement.
  • Authorities froze company's finances, and police investigated.
  • 2006: Gomen pursued recovery of RM242 million in outstanding debt.
  • 2008: Federal Court rejected their application to appeal
  • Gomen proceeded with winding up company
  • A former independent director later wrote that the company's claimed intellectual property raised serious technical questions and that the authorities ultimately failed to build a legal case against the inventor.

Here is a new story.

S-----nk and its founder and CEO, M-------i, have been associated with several major financial controversies, substantial investment losses, corporate-governance disputes and legal proceedings.

1. Major Controversies and Financial Setbacks

1.1 The W----k investment

S-----nk invested approximately US$16b (RM64 billion) in W----k over several years. Embroiled in controversy surrounding its governance, founder A--m N-----n's leadership and its unsuccessful attempt to go public in 2019.

W----k filed for bankruptcy in November 2023.

S-----nk also faced legal disputes after abandoning a proposed US$3 billion share purchase from W----k investors in 2020.

1.2 G-------l Capital

S-----nk's V---n Fund invested approximately US$1.5 billion in G-------l Capital, a supply-chain finance company.

G-------l also provided financing to businesses backed by S-----nk. These overlapping relationships raised questions about conflicts of interest, credit risks and the allocation of losses.

G-------l collapsed in 2021, prompting scrutiny of its financing arrangements and the exposure of associated investment funds.

1.3 V---n Fund investment losses

S-----nk established its V---n Fund to make large investments in technology companies and rapidly growing startups.

Some investments performed poorly or lost substantial value. In May 2020, S-----nk reported approximately US$18b (RM72B) in V----n Fund operating losses for the fiscal year, amid declining valuations and problems involving companies such as W----k.

The losses prompted questions about the company's investment valuations, concentration of risk, debt exposure, transparency and governance.

The episode demonstrated the financial consequences of an aggressive investment strategy.

1.4 Technology-stock trading controversy

In 2020, S-----nk made large investments in US technology stocks and derivatives through an investment operation associated with its No------r unit.

Media reports raised questions about the unit's relationship with M-------i's personal financial interests and whether adequate safeguards existed to manage potential conflicts of interest.

M-------i reportedly denied that the arrangements created a conflict and defended the compensation structure associated with his investment expertise.

These reports established controversy and scrutiny.

2. Investigations and Regulatory Scrutiny

2.1 US Securities and Exchange Commission

In March 2021, the US Securities and Exchange Commission confirmed that an investigation involving S-----nk-related trading activities was active and ongoing.

The matter arose amid scrutiny of the company's technology-stock trading and its N-------r investment unit.

2.2 US Federal Trade Commission

In 2025, the US Federal Trade Commission undertook an in-depth review of S-----nk's proposed acquisition of A----- C-------g.

The transaction attracted regulatory attention because of its implications for competition and the technology sector, particularly the growing importance of AI chips.

2.3 J-----se tax-reporting issue

In 2020, media reports said that J-----se tax authorities had identified approximately xy billion in under-reported income associated with S-----nk for the fiscal year ending March 2019.

The company reportedly attributed the issue to accounting-period errors, calculations and income reporting involving overseas affiliates.

3. Questions Concerning M-------i's Personal Financial Interests

3.1 Potential conflicts of interest

Media reporting has raised questions about M-------i's personal financial arrangements in connection with investment operations associated with S-----nk.

These reports have focused on whether his interests were adequately separated from those of the company and its shareholders.

3.2 Personal exposure to investment losses

In November 2022, Bloomberg reported that M-------i faced approximately US$4.7b (RM18.8b) in personal financial exposure under investment arrangements connected to his compensation.

Losses in the V----n Fund had reduced the value of interests associated with those arrangements.

The situation illustrated how the company's investment strategy could expose both the corporate group and its founder to substantial financial risks.

4. W----k Governance and Shareholder Disputes

S-----nk's relationship with W----k generated litigation concerning control of the company and the cancellation of a proposed share purchase.

W----k's co-founder and a special committee representing other investors challenged S---bank's decision to terminate the proposed transaction. S-----nk disputed the claims.

5. More Recent Financial Risks: Artificial Intelligence Investments

S-----nk has increasingly focused on artificial intelligence, including a substantial investment in O----I and spending on AI-related infrastructure.

In May 2026, Reuters reported that S-----nk had recorded a substantial annual profit, driven in large part by gains associated with its O----I investment.

5.1 Debt and financing pressure

A July 2026 Reuters report said S-----nk had reopened discussions about a US$10b  loan backed by its O----I stake while facing a March 2027 deadline to repay a US$40b (RM160b)  bridge loan used to finance its O----I investment.

These reported financing requirements raise questions about liquidity, borrowing costs and the concentration of financial exposure in a limited number of major investments.

5.2 Credit-market concerns

In October 2026, Bloomberg reported that the cost of insuring S-----nk's debt against default had risen to its highest level in nearly four years, amid concerns about AI spending, financing costs and potential acquisitions.

Such movements can indicate increased investor concern about credit risk.

5.3 High-cost borrowing

An October 2026 report highlighted a reported US$11b (RM44b) high-yield bond offering by S-----nk and the pressure to generate returns from its AI investment strategy.

The central financial question is whether the company can generate sufficient returns to justify the scale and cost of its investments.

These risks are material, but the ultimate outcome remains uncertain.

6. Overall Assessment

Legal and regulatory exposure

S-----nk has faced genuine regulatory scrutiny and civil litigation. The SEC confirmed an active investigation involving S-----nk-related trading activities in 2021, although the final outcome is not established by the sources reviewed here.

Investment performance

The W----k collapse, G-------l-related losses and earlier V----n Fund setbacks demonstrate that S-----nk has made some exceptionally costly investment decisions.
