CHINA DEVELOPS NEW STRAIN OF 'IMMORTAL' RICE THAT IS PLANTED JUST ONCE

I am not surprised. China has already :

1. started mass planting of a new rice variety which thrives in salt water (coastal wetland)
2. they have another new strain of rice that grows to TWO METERS tall and is resistant to pests and flooding
3. They have new rice strains that can yield 15 metric tonnes per acre.

Thank you to reader Moggy who sent me this news about China's immortal rice plant.

"This news about immortal paddy that only needs to be planted once is a fact. Researchers in China have developed a variety of perennial rice (PR23), a result of a cross between Asian paddy (Oryza sativa) and African wild rice (Oryza longistaminata). This paddy allows for repeated harvests without the need for replanting each season, up to about four to five years before the yield decreases and needs to be replanted. These paddy advantages include a reduction in farmer cost and working time by up to 50%, increased profit by up to 161%, and environmental benefits such as reduction in soil erosion and carbon emissions. However, there are challenges such as the risk of increased pests, pathogens, and the need for herbicides. If you want to know more, you can read reviews from Amanz and other related sources.
